Quoting Juventus (Reply 2): Do they know the cause? (WX, MX, Pilot error, etc)
The media is reporting that the Secretaría de Gobernación (ministry of the interior) is officially stating the crash was a weather-related accident. Apparently, the crash took place in conditions of zero visibility against the very top of a mountain range.

Early news reports described it as a "Bell Helicopter", so probably a 412. Though it doesn't mean that the media is wrong and it actually was an MI-8 series. No pics of the wreckage yet.

Quoting N506CR (Reply 1): Does anyone know what registration/helo type it was?
It was a Bell 412EP, registration XC-PFI. An unfortunate registration. A helicopter owned by the state of Morelos had that same registration. That helicopter also went down killing its 8 occupants in 1997, also on a government flight assignment.
According to a witness that actually reached the crash site, there was nothing recognizable left. Just burnt, small pieces of wreckage. No word on the bodies but I guess it can be surmised.
