Today, Air Force One flew into AUS as President Bush prepared to tour the damage done by Rita. I was in my garage with my dad, who was helping me construct a house for my beagle. The saw was going, but I still was able to hear some very loud jet engines. I ran outside, and looked south toward the direction of the noise. I looked just in time to see three flares. I yelled for my dad to have a look. He came out, and we watched the F-16 pulling some very sharp turns, with afterburners. Then, he launched two more flares. After that, he circled a few more times, then left. I could hear another one to the north, but never saw it. I later learned that Air Force One had come to AUS, and there was a civilian craft in the way. It was the first time I had seen a military craft use their flares.....it was kind of eerie not knowing what was the issue...until later. I could not find a local news article on it tomight, but a friend of mine also saw a report about it on the local news. Any additional info would be appreciated!

Luckily for him, they warned him with flares first! If they use flares, doesn't it mean that they could not establish radio contact with him, or the pilot ignored the radio transmission?

then they would assume he was some kind of threat. One thing I learnes quickly as a student pilot is not to fool around with TFR's especially the presidential ones....

Thanks for the article! I was too far away to see that "small, Cessna-type aircraft," but I was close enough to see the flares, and the F-16...And I was definitely close enough to hear that thing! That has to be one of the best sounds in the world!

Back way before my military service ever came into play, the Guard unit that I joined flew F-106's and then F-16's. I can't recall exactly if it was a 106 or an F-16, but as one was doing some maneuver's over a populated area, 3 live flares were ejected from the aircraft. One landed on a McDonald's rooftop and burned through the roof and into the kitchen. The other two landed in the parking lot. Needless to say, the Air Force ended up paying for that roof to be patched up.
