I was scheduled to fly out on Air France on 9/26 at 415pm local time. At checkin in SFO, AF explained 084 had returned to CDG after take off at the request of US officials. Now I am scheduled to take off on AF083A on 9/27 at 300am SFO time. I did receive a meal voucher($25USD), phone card and a room at the Crowne Plaza. What suprises me is that I receievd this traveling on a SkyMiles award. I assumed award travelers were not entitled to this type of compensation. Comments?

This seems to be affecting schedules for the next few days--the CRS now shows AF83 will operate at 23:45 on Wednesday 9/28, instead of the usual 16:15.

Wow, a room at the Crowne Plaza, that's really nice.
I had seen the flight status of AF084 ... consequently AF083 ... departure at 04h00 local time sorry guys ...
the meal voucher for the delay is pretty standard ... any delay over 2h we do the same thing ... though I have never had a delay of more than 5-6 hours, that's already long enough ... cannot even imagne 11 hours.
I hope you still have a nice flight nonetheless.
I would love to hear how the rest of it goes ... at the airport, inflight ... I wonder if they will change the meal service since normally it's a dinner and hot breakfast service ... will it be vice-versa? Just gets my head turning...

Perhaps for minimum crew rest times??? The crew already stays 48h ... though AF084/083 for the 27th is showing "on schedule". Or perhaps as you say LH459, just the availability of the aircraft(s).

I think all passengers are entitled to that sort of treatment during a delay. Back in 1994 my family and I were travelling back to the UK using an ID90 staff ticket with BA. There was a problem with the plane, and the spare part for it had to be shipped from Seattle. We were delayed for 29hrs, and even though we were using staff tickets we were given meal vouchers and a room at the airport hotel.
The best part was the flight on the way back, as BA tried to offload as many people as possible onto other flights, so we had 4 seats each in economy.

Two months ago, my flight JFK-BRU with American Airlines was delayed for over 4 hours also because of a mechanical problem. I received an extra 10000 bonus miles in my AAdvantage account. I wrote a trip report about it. So yes I think too that all passengers are entitled to some sort of compensation when there is a significant delay, either extra miles credited to your account, a discount on your next purchased ticket, or a free upgrade to the next class of service.

When the airline has to compensate passengers with hotel rooms and meal vouchers, all passengers deserve the same compensation regardless whether they are travelling on a free ticket or not.

I was driving into the airport at 430a and saw a 744 take-off, but did notice that it wasn't the normal 742F of JAL or Nippon Cargo. It wasn't till I was walking in that I saw the AF agents leaving. Ouch, thats a long night. Fly safe Astro!

In all my AF flights I have experienced two large delays:
- one on a CDG-SIN flight, the 777 had a problem with the landing gear when leaving CDG. 12 hours delay (it was a summer peak, no other 777 available). Was given meals and a night in the CDG Hilton.
- one on a SGN-CDG flight, the 747 had a sensor broken, and the replacement part was flown in the next day from BKK, as there was no more flight later the same day. 14 hours delay, was given meals and a night in the SGN Sofitel.
Both times I was travelling on AF Business class award tickets, but I was treated exactly like other passengers. Thanks to AF.

..on a side note..such an early morning spot would have been kind of cool..but I would have been a bit too dark...if it was after sunrise..or just before sunrise, I would have driven to SFO just to take a photo of the AF plane...
