How are ferry flights "called" or identified?
Do they have a flight number? registartion maybe?

CO ferry flights are numbered 99xx.

Probably, my assume that all US airlines get flight number 99xx. ATC and airlines will know the flight is empty passengers board. It is easier for them.. I guess so.

AA uses 9xxx series flight numbers for non-scheduled operations. It could be ferry flight, extra section (additional flight that day that city pair), maintenance test, charter, or whatever. Flight number does not tell ATC what is on board the aircraft.

It's up to the company ops how they choose to number the ferry flight. It will be chosen in such a way that they can track the status and so that it deconflicts with other flights.

Rarely is ATC concerned about pax, but in emergencies they will ask for fuel and soul state.
