Domodedovo Airlines today applied with the US DOT to begin scheduled non-stop service between Moscow's Domodedovo airport and Miami beginning on or about 1 April 2006. Domodedovo Airlines intends to operate the service thrice-weekly using IL-96 aircraft, making this one of only two scheduled services to the United States on Russian aircraft (the other being Magadan Airways scheduled Anchorage service). They had originally intended to offer only charter service, though that has changed. They have also put off plans to enter the New York market, probably brought forth because of Continental's plans to enter Newark-Moscow in 2006.

I think this airline should fly to the West Coast, perhaps LAX, SFO or SEA.

I think they are trying to tap into unserved markets. Seattle and Los Angeles already have Moscow service. I think Chicago would be a logical market for them to look into.

Hopefully their Il-96s won't still be grounded, otherwise I think they'll struggle!
I was in Moscow in August when the grounding came in to effect and E3 were pressing some of their old Il-62s back in to service. I doubt they'd be allowed to use those monsters to MIA.

Are they still grounded? I didn't know that.
In addition, to note, there has been some rumours that they will operate MIA-DME 2w and MIA-LED-DME 1w. They have requested broad Miami-Russia authority for this purpose.

If anything they should fly LED-EWR (or JFK), NOT LED-MIA, making one of their DME-EWR (or JFK) flights run via LED. I think St. Petersburg-New York has huge potential, and am surprised noone has jumped on it.

I'm assuming so - I haven't seen anything to the contrary.
It is quite surprising where Russians go on their holidays. Turkey is very popular, as are the Maldives. There were lots of Russians when my wife and I went to the Maldives for Easter. I remember seeing Kras and Transaero 767s at MLE. I imagine Florida would be a popular destination for Russians (especially in Winter!)

Domodedovo Airlines has canceled plans to fly to New York City to concentrate on Miami. MIA-LED could work for them simply for the fact that they are a holiday airline.

3x weekly IL-96 service to MIA? One word: Wow!

Aeroflot operated JFK-LED with A310 for awhile - once or twice a week, id say five years ago.

I rememebr that back in the day. I think cutting ORD and JFK-LED, (and YUL to ane xtent) were too radical. I think YUL could work (even tho UN is failing, SU has quite a following) once or twice a week, bring back ORD with the 76ers 3 times a week and you can even use cx traffic and bring back JFK-LED once or twice a week.

Wow an Il-96! I would love to see any Russian or Ukranian (Antonov) airliner here in Zurich. In the 1980ties we had here regulary some Tu 134 and 154. This makes spotting more interesting, not only A and B and some regional aircrafts. Now we only have very seldom an An-124.

Nope unless hushkitted to meet stage III noise levels. I heard the ones that fly for the Russian State Transport Airline aren't too loud, so probably hushkitted. Are there any other IL-62s hushkitted?
Im not sure if Aeroflot had 2x daily flights on some days to Miami but I remember once in 1994 I saw two IL62s on adjacent gates at MIA. They also flew the IL-62s to Orlando during the mid-90s. I have no idea the loads on these flights, don't think the yield could have been that great.
Let's hope this new Miami service is not just a tease, seeing IL-96s at Miami would be sweet

I have a picture of an IL-62 at MCO and I remember the howl of the engines. I also have pictures of the IL-62's and IL-96's here on the US west coast. I had heard that SU and Mavial used to fly TU-154M's to SEA from the Russian Far East.
Repeating someone else here, I would love to see additional Russian planes here on regularly scheduled US routes.

Quoting Tailfin (Reply 19): It may then operate via Shannon as did the Aeroflot service way back when...('via intermediate points')
I doubt it. Almost all airlines ask for "via intermediate points" when applying for new routes just for the sake of having it just incase. The flights will be non-stop, most likely.

Very cool! would love to see MIA get Russia service once again... I know all my Russian friends up in Sunny Isles would love it.
Surprising AEROFLOT did not ask for this before? Specially after they left...

I'm looking forward to flying on the IL-96. We were planning a trip to Russia next summer. Now I know how I will be flying there. The other good news with this is flying to DME and not SVO to connect to other flights in Russia.
I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.

I had no idea they had this, but it seems they now have PTVs on all the IL-96 and IL62M aircraft in their flight in business class, and LCD main displays in the economy cabin. I guess they should be added to the next PTV thread...
