Anybody has more information about the yields of the SJU Amerian Airlines hub?

I know for example that the fares from SJU to CCS on the AA flight are more than expensive. The fares on the route are staring over 500USD....

I can imagine that AA is earning a hell of money with the SJU hub.

While yields at SJU overall are not as high as yields at MIA, this is largely due to the fact that SJU handles fare more connecting traffic in distributing mainland U.S.-originating passengers on to Eagle (Executive) and some mainline flights to about 20 cities across the Caribbean basin. These connecting itineraries pull down yields a bit, and the fact that some of the flying is on Eagle doesn't help either, when MIA is almost all mainline, and generates far more O&D traffic. That's why SJU may have somewhat lower yields overall than MIA -- because of the connecting itineraries -- even though O&D itineraries to and from SJU may be high. In other words, the connecting fares for cheap tickets to the Caribbean on AA are almost always routed through SJU, not MIA.

The profit must be there because SJU continues to experience incremential growth over the years. When other hubs took a post-09/11 hit, I can't recall any destinations or service cut from SJU. In fact, LAX-SJU and some new islands on Eagle have been added since.

It is a unique hub that AA has a good lock on.

what about new long-haul flights? for example a SJU-London flight (I am not sure if they could use LHR)

+ a flight to MAD (I know IB is already flying the route but I see more potential)

Most US-SJU routes are not particularly high fare due to lots of competition from airlines including Jetblue, however all the extra bags, refrigerators, car tires, TV's etc being transported provide a nice supplement to simply the airfare revenue.

This thread caught my eye because I paid a rather exhorbitant price for a round-trip ticket on LIAT a few years ago to travel on to SXM from SJU and back to connect up with a free ticket I had to San Juan on United. I checked fares again today, and it appears AA and other carriers are still receiving a premium on even the connecting traffic going through their SJU hub. Feel free to rip apart my numbers, but these are the figures I pulled off of travelocity.com for the cheapest round-trip fares on AA for travel departing Jan 11, 2006 returning Jan 18, 2006 (both Wednesdays).

Seems to me that AA is picking up quite a lot of revenue shuttling passengers to Eagle flights at SJU for onward journeys to points in the Caribbean.

British Airways served San Juan for some time and closed the route after September 2001, I think. I think they closed it because loads on the flight where not that high and they could be using the B777 scheduled for the routes for more beneficial routes.

From my understanding Iberia does very well on their MAD-SJU-SDQ-MAD route. Iberia and American both have flights from MIA to MAD, Iberias flights are operated by the B747-300s and the A340-300/600s and the American flight is operated by a B767-300 which is never as full as Iberias flights?

I think that American profits a lot on the EWR/JFK-SJU routes because of the large population of Puerto Ricans in the five burrows.

My mom is from Puerto Rico and her family lives there, we fly American to SJU from EWR and JFK until I was about 8 and could think for myself and figured out that Americans A300s and B757s wheren't that comfortable so we switched to Continental, now we fly Jet Blue. Jet Blue works for us because of their schedule into SJU. My grand mother just flew in to JFK from PCE because she lives near PCE and finds it so easy to use.

Actually there is: AA238/239. Ops 5,6 LAX-SJU and 6,7 SJU-LAX with 763 aircraft.

Sure there is, it just doesn't run everyday.

AA 238 eastbound on Fridays and Saturdays, and AA 239 westbound on Saturdays and Sundays.

Incorrect. AA flight 238 flies Friday/Saturday LAX-SJU and flight 239 SJU-LAX Saturday/Sunday nonstop with a 763.

AAs SJU-LAX 767-300 is a route that during high-season operates daily (Peak Summer and Xmas/New Year's Holiday). The load factor on the route is high. It is also scheduled to provide US West Coast passengers a lot of conxs. from SJU to the Islands (on AA and Am. Eagle) and viceversa.

That all still happens today, just as it did circa 1960.

AA gate agents in places like BOS, JFK, PHL, etc., very commonly must deal with excessive extra baggage that does very often include car parts, appliances, etc. It absolutely happens to this day. A good friend who is an AA gate agent at JFK has some stories about people on the "Roach Coach" flights down to SJU, SDQ, STI, PAP, etc. and the things they try to check as baggage at the airport the day of depature.

I don't know what you do, But I work these flights. I see what gets brought on to SJU.

PAP,STI, and SDQ are in a whole different league. You just can't compare. That is the problem with employees at AA, they classify everything that is "Caribbean" as one destination. Puerto Rico has "car parts", and "appliances" at Sears, and Firestone. Don't confuse the Caribbean as one destination, it as a multitude of languages,economies, and people.

I am sorry, but until I see you on the bigbus to every destination AA flies to in the Caribbean, then you can talk about what is and what is not. Your gate agent friend does not know SJU, from SJC.

From my cursory review of airfares, it's obvious, at least to me, that AA is raking it in on the not-so-cheap connections at SJU to Eagle flights to the rest of the Caribbean.

What percentage of traffic that AA hauls to and fro SJU is O&D, traveling on competitive fares, and what percentage is connecting to monopoly-priced Eagle flights? Anyone know?
