Interesting column from British motor jornalist Jeremy Clarkson from todays Sundays Times, praising the VS Upper Class product over BA New Club World.

I've flown VS Upper a few times now, and have not flown BA New Club World. Looks like I made the right choice!

Rich.

Jeremy Clarkson is a great guy, but he does tend to like cars that go fast which also have tight uncomfortable seats and minimal luxuries. And yes, they cost a lot too.

Jeremy Clarkson liked the flashier parts of Virgin Atlantic, sure.

Trust a VS admirer to post the full article (when the link seems to be working fine). I would suggest that the title of the thread be changed from 'Sunday Times praises VS over BA' to 'Clarkson praises VS over BA'.

Non-UK members might wonder "who the heck is this Clarkson?" He is a journalist, with a love affair for fast cars, fast living and all things that appeal to the 'nouvelle rich', and presenter of the BBC's series 'Top Gear', which is relegated to BBC2. He is a brand snob, and cannot express his views on anything without comparing it to something outlandish or lacing it with his own brand of weak humour.

Just look at some of the intended humour in the article

Quote:
You're welcome on board by a homosexual in grey flannel trousers

Might be funny if you can take homophobic jokes but this is just Clarkson trying to be outlandish.

Quote:
..buying the tedious and slothful 777 to replace brilliant jumbos

I can just see him now. "Oh my God. It's a 777! Two engines are missing from under the wing! Let's get off!" A difference of 0.01 mach hardly makes the 777 slothful, and what about VS converting from brilliant 747s to A340s? I would love to hear Clarkson's comments when he sits on an A340 out of NRT/HKG/JNB.

Quote:
And what happened when they ditched Concorde? Did I work myself into a frenzy of righteous indignation. Did I rant and rave? No. I blamed the French."

Ignorant comments from someone who wants it known that they have flown on Concorde, no doubt with the homosexual in grey flannel trousers welcoming him on board!

Quote:
Still, this time they offered to send me a car to pick me up…a sort of Volvo

He we are, dropping brand names again (and the presenter of Top Gear is not even sure if it is a Volvo).

Quote:
Here, there was a restaurant, bar staff, a smoking area that wasn't … a Jacuzzi

I wonder how much Bearded paid Clarkson to make sure he includes all this in the article. What about the Molton-Brown spa at BA? And his comments about the typical passengers in the BA lounges.

Quote:
Normally two similarly priced products designed to do the same sort of thing are roughly the same. A Ford is much the same as a Vauxhall. Evian is pretty much the same what comes out of your tap

Clarkson's comments are tripe if he cannot tell the difference between a Ford and a Vauxhall and Evian and tap water.

Quote:
But on Virgin you have a girl in stockings and a suspender belt to give you another massage, and there's a bar.

For the sake of decency, I hope the masseur is not wearing stockings and a suspender belt and nothing else! And the bar area can sometimes get very noisy when people like Clarkson do not know when they had enough!

Quote:
And then I was escorted by a pretty, slim girl, which is what airline employees should be like, to the Virgin lounge

Sexist remarks and Clarkson might be implying that BA's employees are the opposite. Give me the professionalism of a BA employee over a Virgin amateur any day.

Like any journalist, Clarkson gets things wrong…and repeatedly in this article.

I get the feeling you don't like Jeremy Clarkson then BCAL ?  Wink

The Sunday Times also ran an article on Willie Walsh that made interesting reading, though they managed to make a couple of simple errors, that give the basis to wondering how well written or accurate the article was...

Reference to BA's 737s (and how they would have to be replaced) was accompanied by a picture of an A319 (iirc, may have been A320, certainly wasn't a Boeing product!)

Reference to Go was accompanied by the comment of how BA sold it to easyJet - not the case as BA had already divested itself of Go by the time easyJet got hold of it.

Just a bit disappointing....

Surely the jist of the article is, that he's a long and loyal BA customer, who tried VS and found it better. Simple as that.

He didnt actually bash BA. He had had experience on both BA and VS, more on BA than VS in fact as he confessed to have been a loyal BA flyer. He made a like for like comparison of his experiences, only in a somewhat light hearted way. I dont see what's wrong with him expressing his opinions. They were for the same products and he simply highlighted the differences.

By posting those comments BCAL you were doing exactly the same as what you were accusing Clarkson to be doing. Don't be too jittery and opinionated, take it easy.

When the complete Clarkson article was originally quoted at around 0100 this morning, it was later removed for 'copyright reasons'!

Doubtless, when the moderators see it again, the same will happen!

What BA bashing?? You're eaither reading an X-rated version of the article that evidently none of us can view or you must be on something depriving you of oxygen. Put down the cool-aid.  box

So BCAL, Are you the one then to determine how big or bad VS is? No one else is allowed a dissenting opinion?

This article clearly was not meant to bash BA. Look at the title; "Jeremy Clarkson: I've been seduced by Beardy Airways". It was just a light-hearted, easy reading article for a Sunday afternoon where, as a loyal BA customer, he talks about things that others do better. There is nothing wrong with that. BA is an excellent airline, but there is always room for improvement.

Rich.

I bet the PR folks at VS compted the upper class seating knowing he would write the article. VS is inferior to BA, no way is this true. Just my opinion but BA is a darn good carrier.

I must have missed the bit where he said "I have flown on concorde". I wish I had had the chance.

To be taken in jest. I'm sure he knew what type of car it was.

Again, I'm sure he can tell the difference between the cars. It was a comment to say you usually expect a similar product from 2 suppliers that sell at roughly the same price.

SOD DECENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!

You do not like him bashing BA, yet you can take a swipe at him and VS. DOUBLE STANDARDS.

I am very biased towards BA, however I don't see that article to be unfair. Clarkson simply points out a couple of features that VS offer their J class pax which BA don't.

Of course there are also plenty of things BA offer which VS do not, but omitting that doesn't necessarily make the article anti-BA!
