SV From LHR To India - A Few Questions.

I might be (depending on my new job) returning to India for 2 months in early December. I am, at this stage, particularly interested in SV's routings, two of which (there are others) being LHR-JED-RUH-BOM-RUH-LHR (772s and 743s) and LHR-RUH-BOM-RUH-LHR (772s), both of which costing £425.60 all-in. Now, I have a few questions:

1) What is watching - not using binoculars or taking photos - like at RUH, JED and BOM? I mean, I am happily to discreetly watch, if you know what I mean.

2) What is SV like?

3) If I chose the LHR-JED-RUH-BOM--- etc., routing, I would have about 14 hours in JED. Would SV put me up in a hotel during this period (it would be overnight; UL included a hotel when I flew LHR-MLE-CMB-KUL-SIN)?

The latter option is better. Transiting in Jeddah is NOT a good idea. I don't think they're able to offer accomodation (immigration issue), but even if they do, Jeddah airport is thoroughly unpleasant. RUH is a good airport (though lacking in duty free and other entertainment facilities) and has good views from the all-glass terminal walls.

SV is comfortable but not flashy. The seats are good (although they've fallen behind the pace at the premium end), and the food is delicious. The IFE is okay and the staff can be quite good. When it all works they're a very good airline, but they're inconsistent.

I can't imagine spending any longer than an hour or two in either JED or RUH. Arrivals and departures are few and far between and they tend to be SV flts anyway.

Unlikely about an overnight hotel. You need visas and stuff and that's difficult to get.

Transiting in JED or RUH could be interesting, but more likely,boring.

SV are a good airline on the European routes and definately worth a trip.

Chances are, they are the rustbuckets that ferry workers from the far east as well as the indian subcontinent.

I have flown SV quite a few times, albeit a long time ago, and even their then new 743s were not that appealing. Had the joy of flying in their 1011s as well, which were quite cool...

I recall having to change terminals at JED having arrived on an ET flight, and connecting on to an SV domestic. But this terminal change actually included getting picked up by acquaintances and going on a somewhat long drive to the SV terminal - was young then, but still wondered about the distance and amount of time it took between the two terminals.

I think JED should especially be interesting to hangout at if travelling during the pilgrimage season. If able to go to Hajj terminal, must be cool to see all types of airlines from around the world - Hajj flights operate on tight slots, which would make the observation of the whole ops worth it.

Keep your booze, CD covers with women's pictures on them (including bare arms) and anything not very conservative at home.

I think you would be able to get lower fares from London Heathrow to Delhi than on SV. Levels are particularly low on the airlines from the ertwhile USSR, and most of them are not bad.

The big downside with the SV routing is the kind of passenger who will be on the airplane with you on the Saudia-India routing and the kind of treatment you will get at Saudia airports since you are quite obviously not a "watani".

Good luck if you should use Saudia.

If price is the reason you're choosing SV, I'd recommend a visit to the Southall area - my brother in law just flew AI LHR-BOM-LHR for GBP 325 all inclusive!! (the only thing he did not realize is that the inbound flight stopped in Delhi). I can get details of his travel agent if that's of any help.

Spooting at JED is easy as you generally are taken by bus to the main terminal. You are then bussed down a row of their widebodies.You need to be VERY discreet. You will also be distant from the foreign airlines, some of which are very interesting. You will also be remote from the Saudi air force facility, which can be home to 20 C-130s in various colours. Even more remote is the general aviation facility, where DHL 727s spend the day and a bunch of BBJs and other biz jets. I have even seen a couple of Cessnas parked up there (as you depart the airport for town you can just get a glimpse of the facility on the left).

Transit and transfer facilities are dreadful. If the plane goes tech, you are really stuffed.

RUH is generally airbridge served. Traffic is a lot slower than JED and as has been mentioned the flights are usually after daylight.

Shame you cannot enter the country as the domestic fares are reasonable and it is quite easy to get a trip on a 732 or MD90. I specifically broke myy JED - DMM trip via RUH to get on one of the A300s.

Food on the international legs is good (though I have only ever flown J and F). I have flown Y on domestic legs and they offer snacks. Note that the 777s and 747s have a prayer area at the back of the last Y cabin. This consists of a number of removed seats and the area being curtained.

Get to know the flight attendants, especially the ladies. They are usually Indonesian and they give extra helpings to those who are polite and interested in their job. I was offered lavish extra food on each flight because I wanted to know more about their jobs. They do not ususally get the chance to converse with the passengers.

Another routing option is LHR-JED-RUH-BOM-RUH-JED-LHR, again for £425 all-in. Very good.

AI does, according to its website, have an offer of £488 (or thereabouts) routing LHR-AMD-BOM-DEL-LHR (I MUCH prefer stops enroute). Not too bad.

Which was the travel agent your B-I-L used? Do you have a phone number? I presume someone of non-Indian origin can still get the same fares?

GF does, as usual, have the lowest fares (gone up from £388 to £400 in a couple of days), routing via either AUH, BAH and MCT in both directions. Good fare, but I'd prefer more 'different' airlines and routings.

The last time I flew to India, I flew LHR-SVO-DEL-SVO-LHR with SU. I got 2x 313; 1x IL9; and 1x 772.  Big grin I must phone up SU again.

I checked with him and he used http://southalltravel.co.uk/ - booked on the web - for GBP 328/- all inclusive (for this week in Bombay).
