I realize Saudia's fleet is relatively young as they began a massive fleet renewal after the first gulf war. However the MD90's and MD11's are no longer in production and finding parts must be getting harder. I was wondering if Saudia would be considered a potential customer for either the 787 or A350. As far as MD90 replacement(5 to 10 years from now) would they be likely to buy 737's or Airbus A320 family?

If they have in sight to purchase new planes , i think they will be Americans.
Next month will see the delivery of the first EMB170.

Saudia's fleet isn't particularly young, but the MD90s and MD11s are the youngest in the fleet, so they're not the ones due for replacement. The ones which are, are the A300s and the classic 747s (the 100s and SPs that is, the 300s can last a little longer). At the moment, they're not in the market for new aircraft.

What they're doing (+ what I expect they'll do) is
• phasing out the A300s and pushing up the MD90s to fill those routes
• phasing out (eventually) the classics and putting the 777s in their place
• using the EMB170 on lower demand routes served by the MD90
• using the MD90 on lower demand 777 routes.

This will significantly increase fleet utilisation, and I think once all old equipment has been phased out, they might bolster the fleet with a modest amount of 787s (or A350s but the former is more likely). They'll probably do this before they replace the MD90s which they'll try to run to the ground (they can't sell them).

Their fleet utilization has got to be terrible. I have been to JED a few times, and there are always many many many many SV sitting on the ground.

Fleet utilisation is terrible. They roughly operate half as many hours per type compared to the average network carrier. It is therefore fairly easy to see most of their fleet sitting around JED all day.

SV have no plans for fleet changes except for the Embraers. They have grounded a couple of A300s at RUH. The 300s are the right size for a lot of their markets, the 744 and 777s are too large. The MD90s are not appropriate for all domestic markets so 732s are retained for some of the more remote services.

The Arabesk alliance will throw up some opportunities for Arab airlines to fly on behalf of Saudia to feeed either the JED or RUH hub. This is an alliance worth watching as they are thinking very creatively.

How good are the products on the 747 and 777's maybe they could give the fleet an interior upgrade before they buy new planes????

Yes, fleet utilisation is bad. I remember flying once on flight from DXB to JED and on arrival we had to circle around the apron waiting for a plane to leave and give us the space. It was a quiet hour, us and that other plane were the only active planes at the time, the rest were all parked up!

But it may be that it isn't as bad as it looks. The thing about JED is that everything is parked on the main apron area.

If they have too many large aircraft, couldn't they sell them? The value of 777s is way up. Perhaps sell and buy a better sized aircraft, like the 767?

How many 744s do they have? What engine type?

They have 5 CF6 powered 744s and 22 772s. The 777s are their best performers, so they won't want to sell them. The planes that need to go are the classics, if they can find takers.

Maybe they can lease the 744's to Air India. They are always looking for used 744's  Smile
