Why Doesn't Air Transat Fly YYC - EU In Winter?

Hey,

Why doesn't Air Transat fly in the winter from Calgary to Europe? There are lots of charters from EU coming with tourists to Banff/Lake Louise. I think TS's last flight to EU from Calgary is in October. Can't they find enough tourists to bring over during the winter months?

Thanks for the info...

Vio

Best ask the question of the tour companies that charter Air Transat, rather than themselves?

A few thoughts though...

Is it that the Canadian IT market is pretty buoyant during the winter months so that they have plenty of business taking Canadians south to the Caribbean (or wherever you go on hols..) and don't need to fly Transatlantic?

Likewise, is it that the EU tour operators have more capacity in the winter months so can meet requirements from their own fleets rather than contracting out flights?

Finally, is it just as simple as you say, and that there aren't enough visitors?

Charter airlines are in the business of maximizing profit. While I believe they could find tourists (although few) to bring over during the winter months, the numbers aren't sufficient enough to warrant operating the route. And even if the numbers were reasonable and even profitable for that matter, the profit using an aircraft on a European route wouldn't be nearly as good as using it on a Southern/Hawaii route. So the charters need to go where they stand to make the most money and maximize their profits and revenue. Why operate a flight to Europe when you can make more money on the sun destinations?

Furthermore, with limited demand in the winter for Canada West to Europe (mostly family and business travellers) - the market is already saturated with flag carriers like Air Canada. However, if you do want a cheaper alternative, Zoom does fly year round and their rates are as low as Air Transat and service is better.

The typical marketing of charters in Canada doesn't lend itself well to EU originating passengers coming to Canada. Canadian tour company operated international charters are majority sold as round-trip, Canadian origin, with limited couplings of depart/return dates.

They don't expand their marketing because it isn't as profitable as focusing on other routes that can easily be sold in Canada.

I flew Air Transat to YYZ in June, A310. We made an emergency landing that scared the shit out of my travelling companion (and Hugh Cornwell from the Stranglers, who was onboard) a few minutes out of LGW. We went so close to an easyJet A319 that I heard it. Quite interesting. Getting home was better, although the captain announced, as we sat at the gate at Pearson waiting for a tug, that it was a nice night to "fly to Toronto." Er, can I still get off?

Air Transat were OK. But I'm looking forward to checking out Zoom, I hear they're a lot better.
