Continental's Registration Numbers

I have been wondering about Continental's strange way of registering their aircraft quite a while. Does anybody know why they register e.g. N73461, N45662 and N14363, instead of e.g. N461CO, N462CO and N463CO (or CN, CT or whatever)?

The last three numbers of the N-reg is the ship number of the aircraft in question. For example, N173461 is ship number 461.

It also helps CO crews tell the difference between the 733, 735, 73G, and 738. 733 have ship numbers 3XX. 735 have 6XX. 73G have 7XX. 738 have 2XX.

To me this seems like a more logical system than N242UA, N244UA, etc because it keeps the N-reg and ship number as one single number. Delta's newest 777-232 is N863DA but is ship number 7004 in the fleet. Although the registrations are not pretty looking, they do serve a logical purpose.

Here's the complete list:

0xx - 777/DC-10 (DC-10 originally started at 041)

1xx - 757/767-200 (762s to start at 165)

2xx - 737-800 (formerly 737-100/200)

3xx - 737-300

4xx - 767-400 (formerly used on some 727s)

5xx - not currently used; formerly DC-9

6xx - 737-500

7xx - 737-700 (formerly 727)

8xx - MD-80

Do you know the reg of Continental’s DC-10 'John F Six'. I flew this jet Houston-Gatwick back in 87 and never got the number.

There have been two DC-10s named after Robert F. Six, who served as CAL president 1937-75 and chairman 1975-82. The one you flew on was DC-10-30 N68060. (msn 47850/ln 331 del. 8/28/80) It along with N12061 (msn 47851/ln 334 del. 9/25/80) were the last two DC-10s delivered to Old CAL. Both were leased out to Hawaiian late last year.

The first DC-10 named for Mr. Six was DC-10-10CF, N68049. (msn 47803/ln 139 del. 2/4/74) Ship 049 went to FedEx in 1981.

This year marks a milestone as the last Old CAL a/c are retired. The DC-10s are already gone and the last of the 727-224s (three CMI a/c built 1980-81) will be gone by the end of the year.

Just as a side note to the Ship number list, CO's A300 aircraft were in the 9xx range, while the 747's were in the 10-29 range.
