Hi all
I heard that LH plans to double the longhaul fleet based in MUC in the next 3 to 4 years and that they also consider to fly A380s there.
What is the current size of LH in MUC? How many aircraft are based there? How many aircraft are longhaul aircraft? What is the airport's capacity?
In your opinion, what routes would make sense for LH out of MUC?
Is there a specific market that LH wants to feed through MUC (i.e. North-South, East-West etc.)?

Northern Italy is very important, with many destinations and high frequencies.
But feeding Asia traffic from western Europe/Germany is currently mainly done via FRA, and that´s where I see the big chance for MUC.
Let´s say you want to fly DUS-HKG, and LH flies this route via FRA and MUC.
Altough the flight via FRA would be about 160 kms shorter all in all, the DUS-FRA leg being just 188 kms long is a loss-maker for LH, so better do it via MUC.
(DUS-MUC is 478 kms.)
Terminal 2 in MUC is, according to a report I´ve read some time ago, 70% filled, and since then the numbers should have gone up.
T2 has a capacity of 25 million pax/year, but also handles the flights of the other Star members +4U+DE+QR.

SIN, DEN, GRU, BOM, JNB, CAI and maybe MEX, GIG, CPT, NGO and KIX.

I hope that MUC - TLV will return. MUC, Being a major tourist destination for Israelis in all seasons (and with the raise of tourism here) , surely will be profitable for LH. In fact they dropped it only because of over-protective regulations for LY, but all that is changing now. I can easily see a daily LH A330 from MUC, together with LY (widebody on high seasons, 737NG otherwise).

Varig Charter is runing MUC-GIG non stop once a week during the next 5 months. If it`s succesfull, probably we can see LH with this route or even a MUC-GRU-GIG. Hope to see LH back on GIG.

Well, if LH would introduce all these new services from MUC, I would say that LH would then be bigger in MUC than in FRA. I just don't see how?FRA is roughly twice as big as MUC interms of pax. numbers, and why would LH try to expand so massively in MUC?I understand that FRA has slots problems, but not as much as LHR I would imagine and, they can manage to feed a lot more passengers through their airport(Using only 2 runways), so why not atleast keep the long haul aircraft in FRA, and let FRA have all the LH A380's when they come. I'm sure LH can still expand in FRA, sepecially in the european and domestic network, as well as the international network, rather than giving all the growth to MUC. And especially when the new "Nord-west bahn" should open in FRA will or should LH take that chance to massively expand in FRA, rather than giving their aircraft away to MUC. What do you people think?

big but not really bigger than FRA. And they can still ad new destinations in FRA and grow in MUC with adding aditional flights to existing destinations from FRA.

I think LH future plans for MUC are closely linked to the future of Swiss and Zurich airport, with a certain part of Zurich's activity being transfered into MUC (even though this activity has already considerably dimunished).
