They can't be doing too well. My friends and I are going to SJU Wednesday for $178. Excluding taxes it was like $120. I think that has to be the cheapest round trip fare I have ever bought, excluding Shuttle flights.

So Ted isn't doing well because a few seats on 2 flights this year are sold at a discounted price. It is this kind of insane reasoning that I often have to check the author's profile, and see if they're 15 years old.

So JetBlue,Southwest and AirTran can't be dong well either because they charge such low fares? That's what TED is all about..low fares! Get it?

I know that loads do not equate profits, but every Ted flight I have been on in the past year (except SFO-ONT in it's first week of operation) has been full.

There is a big difference between cheap fares and asininely cheap fares. A $178 fare for a 5 hour flight is asininley cheap. I bought this ticket two weeks ago, so it's not like there should have been a ton of cheap fares left.

If they must have fare buckets this cheap then they can't be doing too well. We think the flight is overbooked because we can't get seating assignments. If the plane is overbooked 3 weeks before the flight, they need raise prices.

Um..., TED flies from all of UA's hubs to various leisure destinations across the country and to a few cities in Mexico. Just look here: http://www.flyted.com/traveltools/routemap.htm?navSource=whereTedFlies

Except in order to create those "low fares" UA had to *spend* millions on promotion and painting this stinking piece...

I think there are two clear signs that TED is adding to UA's bottom line- one that UA as a whole made an operating profit for August of $80 million and TED is part of that, and two, that we're expanding TED service.

I wish UA would publish seperate numbers for TED... I think it would be verrrrry interesting to see what actual CASM vs RASM is! I think it is a safe bet however to assume TED is doing well if not fantastic since expansion is all we hear about.

I think these threads are always amusing to see people's passionate reactions to TED. Theodore (as my friends and I call it) evokes a lot of passion for some bizarre reason. At the end of the day it's just a company trying to stay relevant by matching product offering to market realities (ie. crap revenue environments). Why don't people bash PS like they do Theodore? PS is the same sort of thing... United reacting and adapting to an evolving marketplace.

TED ticked me off a couple weeks ago. I show up at 2:45p at IAD (very early) for a 5:45pm flight to TPA and i can't check in. The kiosk says "see agent". So i stand in line, get to the agent and he tells me "sorry, we might be cancelling the 5:45 flight, check back with me in 45 minutes". I go on to question him why it might be cancelled and he just says it's a management decision. I asked him if it was because the flight wasn't full and he said "No". Anyway, long story short, i luckily got him to reserve me on the only other flight to TPA that day (10:10pm) just in case the 5:45 was cancelled. Sure it enough it was. So i waitied at IAD over 7 hours (zzzzzzzz!), until i could get on the 10:10. I feel fortunate though that i got to the airport so early because at least 25 or 30 people making connections to the 5:45 flight got screwed and couldn't get on the 10:10 since it was sold out.

Ted is out performing all forecasts. Most Ted routes are making 7 figures a month! The model is evolving for Ted service. The first blended service route for Ted starts shortly. LAX PHX will have Ted and UAX service. It will be interesting to see how this route performs.

September and October are the lowest travel periods to the Caribbean including Puerto Rico. It's hurricane season, too. The demand is so low that United/Ted doesn't even offer daily flights from IAD during the off season. Fares sales abound this time of year.

United is expanding the Ted operation and converting additional A320s to Ted. Miami is now all Ted. Here's a United press release announcing new Ted destinations and the Airbus conversions:

http://www.united.com/press/detail/0,6862,52947-1,00.html

If Ted wasn't performing to United's expectations, I doubt they'd expand it.

That is a bold claim! This would imply Ryanair, Southwest , Easyjet or JetBlue aren't doing good either. I don't think I can agree with that.'..

Expansion doesn't mean there profit pushing it. DH expanded very quickly and we all know they had an LF of 43 and were not doing well. Song (now they make money) before early this year made little or no money on any of their routes, but at the same time DL kept adding 757's to its growing fleet. UA is operationally making profit, but that in the summer and mainline can be profitable on a lot of routes when LF's were through the roof and UA is charging and arm and a leg. So don't assume anything, this whole thing for all we know could be a gimmick to add FF's and pump more PAX into the UA system.

PS is what Ted should be--not an entirely different airline but just another different seating configuration with different pricing.

Certainly in the DEN market Ted's performance is disappointing.

In the high season travel month of June (2005) Ted actually lost market share y/y. In July, the carrier fared a little better by adding 1/2 a market share point but only after pouring money into an expensive local advertising campaign. Even then, UA's total market share (UA +Ted + UAEx) fell by 2+ points...about the same as F9's July market share gain y/y.

One of Ted's three stated purposes when it started was to stop the erosion of market share to LCCs. In DEN, it has clearly not succeeded as of yet.
