I'm Flying KLM A330-200 This Weekend!

I am booked on KLM from IAD to TLV through AMS. Confirmed on the A330-200. Can't wait to use the AVOD and enjoy my first trip on an Airbus widebody since flying on a Continental A300 back in the early 1990s. Since then, I have only been flying A319/A320s of various airlines.

Has anyone else flown the KLM Airbus yet?

I'll try to post a trip report and, perhaps, pictures if I can.

Also, does anyone know which 737 model KLM uses on the AMS-TLV route?

Wow I'm jealous, even I as a KLM F/A haven't seen this plane from close yet, although I should be transferred to work on it within the next few months.

Your flight to TLV will be operated with the 737-900.
Enjoy!!!

KLMcedric,

I'm definitely getting the AVOD right? I checked the KLM site, the AVOD has a pretty good range of movies and such.

Does KLM offer outside camera views?

KL461 AMS-TLV is flown with the B737-900. Make sure you use the AVOD on the Airbus, because the KL B737 has NO entertainment at all, no ptv, no overhead screens, no audio, just the inflight magazine Holland Herald. If you travel in Europe Select class (a somewhat better version of economy class, maybe you can call it premium economy) you will be offered a portable DVD player free of charge.

Enjoy your flights.

To bad about the 737-900 having no IFE, but I'll be pretty tired by then. We plan on spending a day in Amsterdam between flights (IAD-AMS lands at around 7 am and the AMS-TLV doesn't leave until 7 pm that night). Is that feasible to do a day in the city? How much time should we allow to get back and clear customs/security for the TLV flight?

With a -900 flight, that will leave me with only one type of 737 I haven't flown on, the 737-600. I don't see an opportunity for that anytime soon.

So far I have flown on:

737-100
Continental

737-200
America West
Ansett Airlines of Australia
Southwest
Continental

737-300
Southwest
Delta
Continental
British Midland
US Airways

737-400
US Airways
British Midland

737-500
Continental

737-700
Continental

737-800
Continental

You bet the AVOD is good!!!
KLM just won a price for it , I believe it is for best AVOD on any European
airline.Too bad they only have it on the T7 and the new busses.
You have somewhere in between 50-60 movies to choose from, and a
bunch of series and a huge collection of music.
You can also send a text message to any cellphone you want at the cost of
2,50$ per outgoing-incoming text.

Lots of time to do a city tour. You can either take the train which has a station located underneath Schipol Plaza, which is located just outside of the baggage claim and customs upon your arrival. Take the train to Amsterdam Central and it only takes about 15 minutes. There are also organized tours which have info booths setup both on the airside and landside of the terminal.

As far as when you should be back, you will normally receive both boarding passes (for the AMS and for the TLV flights) when you check-in at IAD. Your baggage will be checked through to your destination. However, since you are flying to TLV that may be different. If you do have your boarding pass, you just need to go through security and go to the gate. The TLV flights usually leave from pier E. Again, since you are flying to TLV there may be a secondary screening before you board, so you may have to be at the airport say 2 hours before departure. Best thing to do is check with KLM staff at one of the many transfer desks or info desks in the terminal when you arrive.

I'm so jealous that you get to fly on one of the new KL A330's! Enjoy your tirp!

If you are holding a US passport you will have no problem to go through immigration and visit AMS.IIRC KL461 will depart at 19.40. I suggest that you will be back at the airport around 17.30. You will have plenty of time to find your gate and pass the security checkpoints. There will be an additional security check for TLV flights at the gate; this check will start around 18.00. Do check your gatenumber and do NOT rely on the gatenumber which is mentioned on the boarding pass that you received in IAD; flights in AMS will get frequent gatechanges throughout the day.

About visiting AMS, you can go on your own or with a tour. Several tours can be booked through the Holland Information Desk, 1 is located just in front of the immigration and casino and the E-pier (where you probably will arrive), the other desk is in arrival hall 2.
If you go on your own, you can take the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which is right in downtown (about €7,= return ticket). I will not recommend a taxi, it's expensive and usually it will take longer than the train because of heavy traffic. The trains run every 20 minutes and the journey is 15-25 minutes (depending on the number of stops).
Make sure you keep an eye on your cabin baggage(thieves!), you better put your cabinbaggage in a locker (located just b4 immigration at E-pier).

Amsterdam is a small city, if you just want to look around, it's a perfect way to spend your time. If you want to visit a museum (Anne Frank, van Gogh, Rijksmusuem) your time might be too limited.

Let's hope for a sunny day, since we can have some nasty weather in October and November.

Enjoy your day!

I wasn't to sure about the extra security check on the TLV flights, I've never flown on one but I've walked by them several times.

E-pier (where you probably will arrive)

Do you know if the A330's usually use the E pier or are they also using F pier and eventually D pier depending on destination?

So far, I saw the A330 only at the E-pier (KL only has 2 now). The D-pier is not suitable for the A330 because of the wingspan, F-pier should be OK.

I wasn't to sure about that one. I figured they may squeeze one in there if they need it for the LHR flights. I guess they'll put those flights up at E pier like they used to with the old A310 (ah, what memories).

Thanks for the info!

I have flown on KLMs B777 before which has the same IFE as the A330-200 as well as the A330 and it is a very comfortable interior. The AVOD is amazing, by far the best I have experienced.

I hope you enjoy your flight!

Another question for AMS experts (ACDC8 and DK601 and any other people out there):

Relatives of mine are coming in on a separate flight from JFK. It think they get in between noon and 1 pm. They are booked on the same flights to TLV.

Would they have time to go to the city and back and actually see anything in town.

Should they just stay in the airport and forget trying to go anywhere?

Have a great flight on that A330! Back in June I was going through security at EWR along with a KLM 767 crew. I had a short chat with the captain and he was really looking foward to flying the A330.
Before I got married whenever I used to have a long layover in AMS the pervert in me would always end up in the Red Light District!

Although I have never flown a KLM A330, I have been on it while flying with AF. Very nice aircraft to fly on. I don't want to damper your enthusiasim but I hope KL doesn't put the "little boxes" for AVOD under the seat in front of you. They do this with their B777s and it takes a way a lot of legroom. You can't stretch your legs out because the boxes take up at least a one-third of the space under the seat in front of you.

KL644 STA is 12.10. As SK601 said, for the flight to TLV (usually at gate D41 btw) the preflight entertainment  Wink starts at 1800.
I'd say enough time for a visit to the city, if you buy a return ticket on the train. Don't take a guided tour, that is costly and takes time, just go out there and walk the old quarter and canalroads. Weather forecast for the weekend is excellent.

I was on board PH-AOB (KL332 no. 2) for 5 minutes last week, just before it left as KL657, and what struck me was the good smell, like a brand new car! She looked very nice inside (what can beat French design Wink) and I couldn't believe I left my camera upstairs at the gate. The cockpit display was positively shining also!

I wish that all skies were orange and blue!!

...can anyone compare the new KLM IFE to Emirates? I've flown Emirates 340-500's recently and their IFE is by a long way the best that I have experienced in Economy to date... The screen size alone is a big plus. How does it compare to KLM's 330?

If there flight arrives on time (which is usually the case for east bound flights) and baggage has been checked through to TLV and they have boarding passes for the cnx flight, they they still have a few hours to spend in AMS. It's not much time, but it is possible. They at least have time to make a few pictures downtown and admire the Grachts (canals).

Just keep in mind that the TLV flights do have extra security screening so be there a bit earlier then ususal. Also, it does seem that the TLV flights are starting to operate out of the D pier (as Lamedianaranja pointed out) as well as E pier. I just checked the AMS website and yesterday's flight left from gate D03. Just keep an eye on the monitors when you arrive at the airport. AMS is an extremely easy airport to find your way in. And if you have time, I suggest the "World of Wings" aviation shop in the Schiphol Plaza at the arrivals hall (just outside of arrivals area 2).

BTW, check out the AMS website for some more info ...
