...anyone else think it's kinda dumb to have a museum but not open it up to the public? I've been to the AA museum near DFW and it was filled with members of the general public--great publicity for their airline.

Actually, I think(key word there) it may be open to the public. Its the second building to the left of the front gate. I believe that if you are not a Delta employee, you have to sign in and show proof of ID. You can always just look up the Delta HQ number in the ATL phone book and ask. But I think it is open. Or hang around the Schlotzky's down the street, its a big G.O. lunch place and you are sure to run into someone who knows the answer.
