Second Largest Czech City Will Get New Terminal

I imagine this is of no great interest to the worldwide aviation community, but I think the design of the new terminal in Brno-Turany is well worth seeing.

The building works began on the 1st of September and they should conclude on the 30th June 2006. The investment of 237 million Czech crowns (about 10 million USD) will be covered by the Region of Southern Moravia, with about 20% of the sum coming from the E.U.

During the first eight months of this year the airport has handled over 213 000 passengers, an increase of over 72% over last year. Apart from charter routes, the airport is served by Ryanair (London) and Cirrus (Munich).

The architect is Petr Parolek, from the studio FA Parolli. From what I have been able to find out, he is a local architect from the city and, amazingly, he doesn't even have his own website...

The 'Villa Tugendhat', from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which MarshalN mentions, has actually been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's a truly amazing place. http://www.tugendhat-villa.cz/html.en/

Does CSA serve the airport, or do they plan to?

The current terminal looks pretty basic to me, least it's got a visiters area!  Smile

CSA doesn't have regular flights to (or from) Brno and, as far as I know, they are not planning them. They have their own free bus service that brings people to Prague, so they can catch their flights from here though.

When Prague experiences bad weather most planes land in Brno, so a new terminal is definitely needed. The charter business has also been booming in the city, so it's high time to do something with, as Rob says, the very (very) basic terminal Smile.

Great news!!!!! The terminal building looks just great!!!!!! I hope this will attract more pax thus more airlines and flights.
I forsee that CSA will start service from Brno to mayor European cities. Possibly CDG, LHR, AMS and maybe BRU.

Sorry, I can't resist, are you sure FR won't prefer to stay at the old terminal  confused  I highly doubt the nice new terminal will meet FR's crappines standards  Wink

But, apart from that, congratulations! It's a beautiful terminal and will for sure improve Brno's infrastructure.

Don't you people realise that it's merely a cost issue? Airlines, like virtually every business, exist purely to make a profit. Costs can hinder the achievement of this. Accordingly, businesses should do whatever they can, without compromising other elements, to reduce costs and wastage. One such way is to serve small airports which aren't attractive, or aren't that attractive, to other carriers: you can negociate discounts on fees and so on. It just so happens that such airports can also help assist in the achievement of other things, like very good punctuality and as few lost bags as possible.

Ryanair really could not careless if the airports it serves have the most modern terminals and facilities or not - and rightly so. All it cares about are its costs.

Lower costs can mean even lower prices or even higher profit margins or both.

Also, most people herein assume that all airlines have the same strategies. No. Just like all businesses, they differ - and rightly so. Indeed, different airlines - in case you didn't know this, and it's fair to say that you probably don't - target different market segments, hence their differing approaches in serving them.

The CSA bus service to PRG from BRNO is not for free. It is only free if you have a connecting flight from PRG to another city and you hold CSA Czech Airlines issued ticket. But if one wants, he/she can use this bus service apart from flying. It cost 158 CZK ( 5.3 USD) and for that you can get 500 miles to OK Plus and one segment towards your status.

Other scheduled airline that will start operations from Brno will be Cirrus Airlines on behalf of LH to MUC 2x daily except saturdays and on sundays only 1x daily. I dont think we will see CDG, LHR or AMS from BRQ by CSA Czech Airlines.

I hope they start 2-3 times per day connecting flights to PRG.

there's a language pun here. when I read it out it reads Pa-roll-ee which is the word we use for a guy who's been let out of prison on his promise of good behavior.

Nice building, however I think BRQ does not really need a new terminal. However I really hope CSA will finally get a clue and strat flights to BRQ.
The potential of the airport is not much beyond current status. Charters, occassional cargo flights, GA, I'd say no more than 3-5 rather odd scheduled international lines. Reason? BTS and VIE are just too damn close.
Besides those a$$holes at the Brno city hall are just too corrupt so this will end up just like the farce called megalomaniac multibillion railway station project.

Pearson, I think you misunderstood A350 and me. I honestly understand the strategy of Ryanair, I agree with it and I'm more than happy that there is a company pursuing such a strategy. However, we have all the rights in the world to make fun of them because of that or say that they don't deserve nice airports because most of the airports they fly to aren’t nice.

I am sure A350 also meant it as a joke and it is amazing how every time someone makes a joke about a low-cost (especially Ryanair) someone comes up to tell him (or those who support him) how wrong and ignorant they are.

Rightly so, I apologize for not stating that clearly. Actually, the cheapest fare I've been able to find on that bus is 315 crowns return (about 13 USD), but that is just a minor detail.

All I'm saying is that in a country where it takes 2-3 hours in each direction from the capital city to reach the border illusions of some huge expansion of provincial airports (ok, OSR could be an exception) - especially those in proximity of major int'l airport - are simply wet dreams of regional politicians without any sufficient economic justification.
On the other hand I admit that the amount of money seems quite reasonable.
