Some friends would like to come and visit to PRG. They are all from SJO. Since they know that I´m into aviation, they said: "Find us some really cheap tickets". I love finding fares and I´m very succesful most of the time, but this time, I´m really screwed. They would like to come to PRG in June and leave in August 2006.
I checked the airfare search engines and I found fares only USD 2000 and up. Normaly, I can find tickets for USD 700. Whats the problem?
I know its 8 months in advance, but isn´t the rule that the sooner you book the ticket, the cheaper it will get??? When should I start looking for the cheap ones???
Any tips on web pages with cheap air tickets???
Thank you very much,

Ahoj Adam,
In many cases, discounted fares are not offered until 6 months prior, but I think the main issue here is the city pair (SJO and PRG). Your friends would probably have better luck with an agency in Costa Rica, since the cheapest fares are generally offered only in the country of origin. You might also try pricing two separate tickets, one from SJO to MAD or AMS (cheap fares on NM or MP), then another one to PRG.

In Latin America, you need to wait until the december peak season is over to start planning for the summer season...

Take LH459 advice and try to segment flights. NM is quite cheap from SJO to Europe and then get a LCC...

You might have a look at Condor. I have checked it, they have round trips from FRA to SJO over Havana for approx. 1000$. However, I don't see round trips beginning and ending in SJO, but it might be worth to ask. And their booking machine currently offers only flights until April.

P.S.: you can also book flights between PRG and SJO with LH feeders there, with virtually free feeder flights.

I think the advice that you wait a little is a good one. I fly to HKG all the time, and I find that cheap fares are often not offered way out in advance.

And yes, it's easier to find cheap fares at the point of origin. Ask you friends to visit a local travel agent who specializes in Europe travel.

I did a dummy booking here at the a.net flight booking feature and it offered me a 1000 Euro connection SJO-PRG and back with Matinair and KLM. However, it was in February/March. If you chose June/August, price rises to 1700 Euro and feeder changes to Czech Airlines. I think the high price is only because KLMs timetable is not yet ready and the interlining is expensive. You should look again. One important point: check if Martinair goes via the USA, I think it does. Visa issues!

I think you should just wait a bit, but not too long, and check the options.

It's a rare occasion that I would ever recommend an auction agency, but you may want to try Priceline. Beyond that I don't know what else to try.

Are they students? Under age 26? Perhaps they could try STA, which offers 'youth' (under 26 age) fares for students (High School, University). You are also looking for flights during the highest peak summer time as to the PRG end, so will always be expensive then. Probably wait until spring to see if something better comes up. One alternative could be a cheap fare to a nearby city in an adjacent country (Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Viennia?) and use a train to your country. If students, then too they could get under 26 age train passes to connect and to see other parts of Europe when there.

Try tweaking your dates to ensure they stay LESS than two months total. Most of the published discounted fares require you stay no more than 2 months or the prices spike upward.
