What do you think of Garuda Indonesia? I have red that they only have a pitch of 39 cm between both armrests.
Is that right??

This came out in the news here in Singapore today.

Bad service? Thanks for telling us, says Garuda

JAKARTA -- For years, air travellers have complained about the lousy service offered by Garuda Indonesia airlines.

Now, the state-owned carrier is thanking disgruntled customers for telling them so.

"The greatest gift you presented to us is your expression of disappointment with Garuda Indonesia's services," the airline said in a full-page advertisement published in The Jakarta Post newspaper on Monday.

"Over the years, passengers have experienced dissatisfaction with our negligence, and services that have not been satisfactory ... we are not surprised to have received so many complaints," said the advertisement, which featured a picture of an overflowing complaints box.

Garuda Indonesia's vice-president for corporate communications, Mr Pudjobroto, said it was admitting past mistakes to convince customers that it was making a concerted effort to improve service.

"We do have a lot of problems," he said. "But Garuda is committed to change."

He said the carrier was renowned for being late and for bumping confirmed passengers off overbooked flights.

Its bad reputation has been ruined further by a poor safety record. In 1996, a Garuda DC-10 skidded off a runway in southern Japan before bursting into flames, killing three people and injuring 170; a year later, 234 people were killed when a Garuda Airbus A-300 crashed into jungle while trying to land on Indonesia's Sumatra island.

In the advertisement, Garuda, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in January, apologised for its shortcomings and promised to improve "our professionalism by giving you an enjoyable, pleasant, and on-time flight." -- AP

I really hope that they will do it.

Garuda is one of the few airlines around to have its origins in something other than a money-making venture. It played a huge role in winning Indonesia's independence in 1945. The problems, which it is striving to overcome, with the help of Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, are the result of it being state owned and hence controlled by one of the most corrupt, crony-infested governments in the world. A lot has changed in the 2 years since that government was thrown out by violent unrest throughout the country, including the culture at Garuda. As my wife is Indonesian, and my first international flights were aboard Garuda (with exceptional service, contrary to what I have read in other places. I have heard that the service from the U.S. was much better than from other parts of the world, and that white foreigners do receive better treatment than native Indonesians, which, as I understand form my wife, is an unfortunate element of Indonesian culture). I wish them the best. They are making profit this year, as well as last year, and they have their load factors up, and are hoping to resume some of their suspended services early next year, just in time for us to return to Jakarta!

The A330 is often used by Indonesia's president. He does receive medical treatment in the US quite often, but I am not sure. Also, Garuda leases many aircraft, and that one may just not have been repainted again after being returned...or, maybe they're doing trials of new North America service! (doubt it with an A330 though)

Hope that helps

Believe me, the pitch is greater than 39 cm, as I was quite comfortable and I'm not exactly a small guy! I flew Garuda Singapore - Jakarta - Denpasar, and Denpasar - Honolulu and received great service on 'both' flights. (I hope it wasn't just because of Cwapilot's comment about being a white foreigner - even though that's probably true...) I love their livery!!!

I flew their A300-600R from Sydney to Jakarta via Bali, and Jakarta to Singapore. Excellent service, good food and on time. I'd happily fly them again.

My sister was on a different GA flight, same routing different day, and someone ate three meals (aircraft overcatered) and threw up over a whole middle section of seats. This was at the beginning of a six hour flight, and the mess wasn't cleaned up. Gross.

Overeating fellow pax notwithstanding, I'd recommend them to anyone. Much better service than United for example (although I would guess UA have better maintenence etc).

fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Maintenance is not, and never has been, a problem issue for Garuda. As a matter of fact, they operate a state-of-the-art maintenance facility at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with several airline customers. The DC10 crash was pilot error, and the A300 crash was due to miscommunication between ATC and the pilot...there was a Merpati flight in the same airspace with the same flight number, and the controller issued instructions to the Garuda aircraft that probably was meant for the Merpati aircraft...that command was for a turn that took the Airbus right into a mountainside.

I am looking forward to having them resume their North America service. Hopefully they will be able to acquire the aircraft necessary to compete with others in the region in the near future.

After reading through some news, I have to confirm that the Garuda A330 you saw at BWI was in use by the President of Indonesia who was meeting with President Clinton.
