Effective Nov 30th, DL will discontinue its ASA CRJ service to HKY due primarily to poor loads. LF's had hovered most of the time in the 40's...way too low to sustain CRJ's.

I would suggest for them to move the flights to EWN (Craven County Regional Airport, New Bern NC) and do a 2x daily (1x Sat) service to ATL, and a 1x Sun-Fri service to JFK.
It wouldn't pull too much from their ISO (Kinston Regional Jetport, Kinston NC) market cause EWN serves more coastal communities than ISO does, and would be able to pull in a lot of traffic by itself.

US Airways Express already serves two destinations from EWN: CLT and PHL.
I seriously doubt that the New Bern area generates enough traffic to sustain US and DL especially during the winter month. The population of new Bern itself is only about 23 thousand and that of the greater NB area only about 80 thousand.

What can I say, Good Riddance to this route. The number seats sold was that of a single daily flight, divided over three flights. It seems HKY pax always preferred to drive to CLT rather than fly from HKY.

As a dispatcher, I have had HKY flights on my desk and the loads were just terrible. Maybe there were better days but it seems like always the loads were in 10-12-ish or less. ISO is going much better though.

I bet Hickory would love to have their old US Airways service back now.

Just for the sake of everyone reading this. (I was getting a case of brain whiplash)
EWN or ISO would not be substitutes for HKY service, they are, what, 250 miles apart!?!
But on the subject of service to Eastern North Carolina, seems to me that either Elizabeth City or Dare County Regional would be good bets for somebody.
Granted those folks are driving to ORF to fly, now, but still...I could see a B1900 or Dash 8 running an old school route like Dare County ---> Pitt County ---> RDU ---> CLT or ATL.

Lets look at some numbers straight from the EWN Airport Authority that I requested last week..
Total 2003 Enplanements: 70,443 Highest Months of Enplanements (May, June, July, August)
Total 2004 Enplanements: 92,516 Highest Months of Enplanements (May-Dec)
2005 Enplanements thru August: 64,090 Highest Months of Enplanements (May-Aug) [Project total enplanements = 96,128 at 3.4% growth over 2004]
So enplanements have already begun to rise.. and so it does seem that additional service could be generated for a 2x daily to ATL. Not only does EWN offer the closest connection to coastal NC, but it also becoming an increased business destination, increase in out of state population moving to the area, and a gateway for the tens of thousands of campers who visit the 7 spring-fall camps in the area..
But perhaps I am just thinking something wrong.. would not be the first time

Service to CLT and ATL would be almost completely redundant. Most people in EWN are coming from places with service to both... I'd love to see how low BZN-EWN O&D is. They'd cannibalize each other.
