I'm just curious to see how this forum members react to this topic.
I think HAV could provide a better stop for JL Japan-Brazil flights; Cuba don't require visas for Brazilians like USA, Canada and now Mexico. Moreover, Cuba is quite an interesting destination for Japanese and Brazilians - both tourists and businesspeople.

It wouldn't make money as the yield would be horrendous. The flight might be able to fill easily, but there is no substainable market for any Japan-Caribbean services.

Cuba has very limited access to US dollars. Cuba could never support a NRT segment.
Worked for too many airlines to list. Banktupcy after bankruptcy after bankruptcy.

Quoting Brasuca (Reply 3): I'm not sure, but I think AC flights to HAV can't overfly the US. So, JAL can't either. Can anyone confirm?
Cubana flights cannot overfly the United States, but that is it. AC can overfly the US on YYZ-HAV, and US airlines can overfly Cuba. US airlines offer regularly scheduled charter flights to Cuba on a daily basis. American Eagle flies to Havana, Holguin, Camaguey, Cienfuegos, and Santiago.

Cubana flights can fly over the USA. I do believe they have to follow certain allowed flight paths. A number of years ago, a Cuban flight went off it's flight plan (not sure of the reason) and overflew a missle base in New York. Their flights over the USA were suspended for a while.
Any flights from the far East to Brazil would be better via Mexico City if wanted to avoid the USA.

How are the Brazil-Japan yields?
I'm not talking about Japan-Caribbean flights, I'm talking Brazil-Japan, HAV is just a stop because a Japan-Brazil non-stop is - at least for now - out of the question and having stops in Canada, USA or Mexico (maybe) don't serve for brazilian passengers.

Who's saying cubans will fly to NRT?
Then what is the point of stopping in HAV? You've got to have substantial O/D traffic for an intermediate stop.
RG picks up local traffic at LAX on their GRU-LAX-NRT run.
