Maybe it's one of those lightweight blow-up convertible sofas like the one I saw on a late-night infomercial a couple of weeks ago...

From what I remember reading once, they are sitting infront of a massive ditch, almost a canal between themselves and the runway.

Indeed. AMS doesn't have fences all around, but a lot of canals.

Seems like people have furnished the area for other spotters.

Seeing that the sofa is red.......

I think it was back in the late 70's / early 80's a photographer published a book of photographs of a red couch being put in all kind of situations and places. Indoors, outdoors, rooftops, etc. I wonder if this is for the next edition of that book.....

True. there are some fences, but that's only at access roads with the runways. at some runways there are even big parking areas with a french fries stand. Most runways have dedicated spotting areas. Spotting at AMS is still a joy and nobody bothers you, unless of course you try to swimm across the ditch or climb a fence...

And today in the news comes the end of this. Schiphol is closing "illegal" spotting areas, such as the polderbaan, and only will allow three areas, Kaagbaan, the terrace (wich I would hardly call a spotters area) and the buitenveldertbaan.  cry
Seems they have succumbed to the fear for terrorists, or so they say.
