A Lufthansa jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport today after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.

The plane, which was en route from Frankfurt to Dublin, landed safely at around 11.30am.

Emergency fire and rescue teams were on the runway as the flight arrived. All 118 passengers were taken off and no-one was injured.

The jet had been on a regular scheduled service from Germany when airport officials received reports of smoke in the cabin.

Since I saw a LH F/A smoking in the galley in January, it is not unlikely the the F/O and this stuff were the cause of the smoke.  Wink

Yes, on a flight to JFK I went to the rear galley to collect my usual "2 hours before arriving in New York" menu which contains of a bottle beer and a vodka-lemon, when I saw an F/A sitting on the jumpseat smoking a cigarette.

It came even better, I asked her if I can also smoke a "quick" cigarette but she said that passengers would probably notice it when two persons are smoking. She kindly offered me the last half of her cigarette, while I was smoking it she gave me an empty Coke Light can, suggesting I should extinguish the cig in it.

I thanked the F/A, took my beer and vodka, and returned to my seat. After two seconds was my girlfriend (she is F/A herself) almost yelling at me because she smelled that I just smiked and thought that I smoked in the lavatory. I told her that at least one crew member allowed me to smoke.  Wink

I saw an LH FA having a glass of wine. I don't know if this was allowed or not. She was in the galley with two other FAs. I'm not complaining because the service was excellent on that flight, especially the FA who was drinking. Personally I don't see any problem with an FA having one glass of wine, it's not like they're flying the plane.

It would also be nice if you could post an article about the landing, so we can find out the, AC, etc.

Ok, what's next now? Probably someone will post something like: "I saw an LH F/A that was friendly"?

Oh yeah, good that the thread is not off-topic.

I dont want to be overly dramatic, but F/A's biggest and most important task is cabin safety......look at the amazing job that the AF cabin crew did in the Toronto accident. Would the F/A's be able to perform their duties after a drinking a glass or two of wine? Think about it.

Ha yes, the famous empty coke can trick!
I used to do that too on high school before I stopped smoking!

*turn the clip towards the hole.
*press the clip gently so the filter of your cigarette stays in it.
*start your sigarette  Wink
*place it in the can and let the clip hold the filter.
*pretend if you drink... and blow your smoke real fast real hard high up in the air.

and practically no one noticed it, especially on very cold days when you make vortexes yourself  Wink

altough it might fail on an aircraft...

Cool, why didn't you tell me that 15 years ago? That is a pretty good trick, I never thought about it when I was still underage.  Wink

You got that wrong, she gave me the Coke can only to extinguish the cigarette, not to pretend to be drinking while actually smoking.

Are you serious?

I honestly find your story hard to believe but more strange things have happened.

On a related note, I flew VS the other day and during the initial F/A announcement right before takeoff, she said that 'Due to federal regulations, cannot smoke in lavatory bla....blah...blah.' Funny part was she said that if you're caught smoking in lav, you might be 'removed' from aircraft...lol. I thought I didn't hear right so I asked my girlfriend sitting next to me and confirmed that's what she had said. I guess they just open the door @ 33K feet and throw you out huuh!

I'll watch out for you Partrick just in case they throw you out on your way back to FRA  duck

I switched, nowadays I prefer to connect at CDG, no need to fly to/from FRA anymore.

Patrick

Edit: Does anyone really think that smoking crew members inflight are rare?

You can smoke @ FRA too and nobody cares (at least you could last time I was there in JAn. 2004).

On a realated note, my brother used to work as a plane mechanic @ NBO and he told me that on AF cargo planes, pilots are served wine with their meals. Is that really true? I highly doubt it.

I know, but I prefer the usual smoker zones at FRA instead of being told that smoking is not allowed. Fortunately that will never happen to you at CDG, they have a heart (better a lung  Wink) for smokers.

This might benefit some people like you, but think about non-smokers....
The best solution are smoking rooms such as they have in Singapore or Bangkok.

Sorry for returning to the thead topic but...  duck  ... the plane that was involved in this incident was a 737 (-300 I think) that was coming from Frankfurt and was going to Dublin anyway! The flight arrived 3 mins late!

This isn't rare, I was on VV (AeroSvit-Ukrainian) on a 763 going KBP-JFK, and this loud group of Americans discussed bribing the FAs to smoke, next thing I know I see a hand sticking out over the bulkhead, and 5 minutes later, the Americans come back... without their money. I take it they had a smoke.
In hindsight, I should have walked into the galley to see if they were smoking or not, but I certainly assume at least one of them was.

Once my Dad was flying on SQ Raffles on a B744 and he had a colleague with him. The happened to see inside the flight deck and noticed that the pilots were smoking. He decided that "why not ask them if I can join them?" and they permitted it! This was all pre 9/11 of course.
