I was just checking a SWISS timetable from 27 October 2002 till 29 March 2003 and I noticed in the end the SWISS MD11 fleet and the names the planes had. I tried to check out photos of the SWISS MD11's and I don't see at any place their names in the fuselage. Here are the names and the MD11's SWISS had at that time:
Considering that these names are those of Swiss mountains, they are not virtual
But to answer your question, the names were supposed to be painted in tiny small letters close to the front door.
I have verified it for some Airbuses but I do not know about the MD-11

I don't know if it was written on the MD-11s as well, but here's a pic of a Swiss ERJ. You might notice the name of the aircraft (and the height of the mountain in meters) written next to the door.
