Hey,

How severe is the damage to these airports? Also does anyone have any pictures to show of the damage? I heard CUN is totally destroyed?

CUN has sustained some damage, but is not "totally destroyed". The biggest problem is lack of electricity:

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/5172604/detail.html

Frontier sent an aircraft to Merida (MID) today to pick up evacuees, and has applied for an emergency temporary authority to fly DEN/MID 2 x daily.

http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.c...m?documentid=360843&docketid=22839

However, they only want it until October 31, because they say CUN airport will be open by then.

cheers

MSNBC showed pictures of CUN. The terminal looked in bad shape, but structurally sound. It looks like at least a week to get everything cleaned up and back to normal. There is limited domestic service, and two chartered international flights left there. Most evacuees are being bussed to MID where they can connect domestically within Mexico, and some airlines are setting up emergency service there. In Florida, MIA was the worst one for damage, but should be operating by now, or Tuesday at the latest. FLL and PBI were less damaged, but supposedly were operating earlier today.

Cancun airport is still closed to commercial flights till tomorrow. Corsair is doing flights from Merida to Paris and to London (on behalf of Thomsonfly).

IKRAMERICA- I have been going to Cancun for 20 years and the terminal is always beautiful.

Pace has been doing relief flights for vacation express out of MID and CUN.

I haven't heard anything about CZM?

All german tour operators have sent planes (LTU/CONDOR/CORSAIR and others) to MID to evacuate tourists and they still will within the next days since CUN will not open shortly. I heard from a relative who was in Cancun during the hurrican that it´s still a big chaos at MID since there are still hundreds of tourists who wait to get flown out. The german tour operators expect to get all german tourists out of there by friday the latest. I suppose it will be the same with all other nationalities.

DL 1503 originates from BDL, did the aircraft make it or was the flight from BDL-ATL canceled?
Thanks,

From what I hear, BCT got nailed hard. Many airplanes will be written off and many of the buildings have been destroyed.

I'm in Chicago right now, but from what I've been told it's been like most hurricanes: trees are down, windows are broken, sand washed ashore near the street, power lines fallen - but no major strucutural damage. Clean up will probably take longer than some of the hurricanes we've had lately - probably going to take at least 3-4 weeks to clean it all up.

The only info DL gave me it`s that first MIA flight was only authorized after 12 AM. I don`t know if BDL-ATL leg has been cancelled, probably not.

You guys are 100% right. I'm in south beach (on Collins Av.) and seems to be one of the few places with electricity. Also, there are lots of trees down, outdoors destroyed, lack of gasoline in the market (every open gas station keep a terrible row of hours!). I give up from rent a car and i'm praying that at least one cab could take me back to MIA in two days (i'm going to Boston Airline Show).

But at least it`s quite hot and sunny, and this is Miami !

The Mexican TV is broadcasting live from CUN Terminal 1 and it is totally destroyed. There is no roof and all restaurants, ticket counters, shops, offices, etc. are destroyed. Airlines are checking in passengers from their offices in Cancun (only MX, AM and 6A apparently) and it is impossible to arrive to the terminal without a boarding pass (confirmed seat) since there is a check point in the highway (only allows confirmed passengers with boarding pass). Flights are only domestic since security checks are done manually (all security checkpoints and scanners are non operational).

MIA is in good shape. I don't see damages on terminals (arrived on Delta Terminal and walk till Concourse D). There are many people trying to obtain a seat to get out Miami, but runways and terminals looks like in perfect shape.
Bad that CUN was so heavy hited by Wilma.
Rojo, do you have any information on how long does it take to get CUN back 100% operational ?

I'm fully aware of that - we're currently evacuating approximately 1500 passengers back to the UK, with some flights leaving Cancun while others are being operated from Merida due to severe airport slot restrictions at Cancun. The terminal is currently operating at 20% of normal capacity due to the extent of the damage.

All our CUN/MID flights are currently staging through POP/ANU for fuel/catering/crew changes - so no crew are currently laying over in the affected areas - just operating ANU-CUN-ANU shuttles, for example.

Pretty grim for all concerned...

Yes, but it was a direct hit from a major hurricane.

I am very aware of the Merida flights - see reply #1 - but don't you think it is good news that the Cancun airport is open at all?

It was said in the news that it will take 3 to 4 months to get CUN airport 100% operational (back to pre Wilma standards). But it will depend on how much money the operator of the terminal (ASUR) wants to invest and how fast. The insurance company was at the Airport but there are no estimates of the time it will take to rebuild.

There are flights in and out of CUN, but that does not mean the terminals are in perfect shape. Terminal 1 was totally destroyed and Terminal 2 was partially destroyed by the hurricane; VOR, radar and ILS are still not in service and everything is done in visual mode. If you want proof then go to the press release of ASUR airports (it is in English):

http://www.asur.com.mx

http://www.asur.com.mx/asur/artman/u...ricane_wilma__ingl_s___261005_.pdf

The press realease for CZM will come up shortly with details of damage.

It certainly is from an evacuation perspective, especially given Merida is 4 hours away by road and completely overwhelmed as it is.

However my main point of posting the picture was to show that the airport and the area will take some time to recover to anything resembling normality. We had already suspended all UK-CZM flights until May 2006 due to the extent of the damage sustained from Hurricane Emily in July. Future CUN operations over the coming weeks and months are currently uncertain...

When I first saw that picture elsewhere, it stated that it was a car dealership. Judging from all the shiny new Ford/Mercury products in the photo, I'd say the Beeb has it wrong. And after following your link, even the BBC doesn't say that's the airport.

Here's a link to the website of the Ford dealer in Cancun, looks like the same building, just in worse shape:

I was told it was the airport, but since I've never actually been to Cancun and having seen the Ford garage's photo, that seems not to be the case.

I am not denying this. What has happened is not good, but I think it helps to retain a sense of balance.

One press report said that "as many as a thousand houses in Playa del Carmen have been completely dstroyed!".

Another channel said that "a dozen houses in Playa del Carmen have been completely destroyed."

I imagine the truth lies somewhere between the two.
