This is a continuation of my MCO-JFK Flight:

After spending 10 days on business in New York City, one can say that you want to escape the madness. My next stop would end up being Portland, OR. I was unable to book myself on the non-stop flight out to PDX due to prior comitments. To make things worse the meeting that morning was cancelled and now I couldn't get on that flight, so I would end up having to leave at 6:00 AM.

June 12th 2000, my flight today would be from New York La Gaurdia Int'l Airport to Portland Int'l in Portland, OR. I arrived 1 hour prior to my departure at 6:00PM. I arrived in a taxi from the hotel and was lucky to get there in one piece with my driver, wow. The ticket counters weren't too bad at 5:00 AM, but then again hardly anything is at any airport.

After check-in I proceeded to my gate, 04, where my Delta 767-300 would be waiting. After going through security, which is murder in NYC, I finally found a seat at my gate which was already pretty packed. This early in the morning the Crown Rooms aren't open, but I wish they were.

30 minutes prior to departure I gathered my carry-ons and readied myself to begin boarding the 767. When I saw the airplane at first I was pretty amazed it was in the old old colors, but she was still in good condition. 20 min. prior to leaving NYC we began boarding our plane. I took my seat, 3C, in the first class section as this particular 767-300 was not outfitted for international flights with BizElite.

The aircraft showed its age slightly, but was stilll in execellent condition. After being served my drink I immediately went to sleep and didn't wake up for another 40 min., this was when breakfest was being served. I had orange juiceand a bagel with cream cheese. Very filling and delicious. Our flight time was 2 hours and from what my neighbor told me we left late, but would end up arriving slightly early, something Delta is good at.

We finally made it to CVG, an amazing airport to see early in the morning on a clear day. Once on the ground we immediately taxied to the gate and wated for the jetway to pull up, except for the slight problem of trying to align the plane correctly. We arrived at gate B11.

Part 2

The funny thing was that my MD-11 was parked at gate B10, right next to where I arrived. I had about an hour to play around in the airport before I needed to be back. I decided to spend my time shoping around at the little stores and finally made my way to the Crown Room for about 30 min. As I made my way back to the gate I found that boarding had already begun on the MD-11 that would be taking me to PDX. This is my first time flying a MD-11 and I was very excited.

I boarded the plane taking seat 2A, a BusinessElite seat. The plane was about 2/3 at pushback as drinks were being served to us. The MD-11 pushed back and the view I got prior of the cockpit was amazing and very simple. The plane was nearly as wide as the 777, but you could notice the small difference. We had a slight delay at takeoff and finally started rolling at around 9:40 am, a 15 min. delay. The takeoff was swift and very powerful. Our flight time would be 4:40 min. at a cruise speed of Mach .86 per the captains orders.

We had breakfest again on this flight, but much larger and more lengthy. We had our choice of waffles, eggs & bacon, or a breakfest pizza. I chose the waffles with coffee and yougurt. A very good meal, surprisingly nearly like a regular resturaunt. The flight was uneventful, but long. We saw a movie, Isn't She Great, not exactly my favorite movie, but it still worked.

We landed at PDX around 30 min. late at 11:30 due to traffic in the area. We reached gate D11 and I departed.

Delta's service is definately improving. The flight attendants were wonderful as was the food and comfort onboard. If I had to make a suggestion it would be for them to increase the allowed time to board.

Whats the exact width difference between the 777 and the MD11? They both have a 2-5-2 arrangement in economy.

I believe the 777 is slightly wider than the MD-11.

Exact figures, care of Boeing's Airport Planning data provided on their website;

(nine hundred pages worth of data)

the width of the 777 cabin is 20 feet 4 inches.
the width of the MD-11 cabin is 19 feet 9 inches.

So yes the 777 is 7 inches wider than the MD-11, making for wider aisles, not neccessarily wider seats.

I was wondering how full that flight was? What day was it? I am going to take a day trip nonreving next week, and would like to take the longest possible flight i can in first class. I assume that the loads on this flight are pretty low. Also i have never been on an MD11, and have never flown in to portland>>>

Excellent trip report. What would the a/c have been if you had traveled nonstop to PDX? I would like to make a stop in a hub if I was not in a hurry(and in first class!) because I would get the chance to fly a larger plane with better accommodations (wc?).

I flew it on the 12th and the load was around 2/3, which isn't bad for that flight. If I would have flown direct I would have been on a 767-300ER.

Load factors on this flight, espically in the summer are always near 100% with only around 10 seats left on the entire plane in DL is lucky.
