Hmmm, I was wondering... What do pilots do during flights aside from the obvious. I mean, once the auto-pilot is on, can they sleep? I must admit it ought to be boring at times.  drunk

They sit, they monitor, they read, they monitor, they communicate with enroute ATC, they monitor, they plan their arrival, they monitor.

See the pattern?

....liaise with the Flight Services Director re cabin service and passengers, list any equipment failures or other items that require attention in the service manual, converse with other aircraft flying in the sector about weather etc.

If the flight is long haul and a redeye, when they get near their destination they bring out their trusted friend - the electric razor (mostly male pilots!).

I was on a ferry flight, YYZ to CBG, we took off about 2100 hours, at about 0300 I woke up and went to the flight station. Where I found the FE asleep at his desk, the FO asleep in his seat and SO reading a magazine. When I asked how we were doing, the SO said "were just following that Canadian DC-10," you could just make out its clearance lights, ahead and below us.

Most of you are right according to the SOP. I cross the pond 3 times a month and once clear of radar we preaty much do anything we want between way point calls (With in reason). Ex shoes off feet on glareshield, read a paper, play cards, take a nap (oopps did i say that) talk about life and wait for the TCAS to go off along with visual traffic checks and staring at the northern lights. When flying within radar coverage somewhat the same but yes we pay a lot more attention to the radio

I know of one CM captain who loves to pull out his laptop on the long flights to EZE or SCL or GRU and show off his porn collection, an FO that flew with this captain once said that he had in his laptop case over 10 porn DVD's and many more short videos in the laptops hard drive, needless to say it was not a boring flight.

It was not uncommon for the 4-man crews on the old Boeing 707s (Capt, F/O, F/E & NAV) to play entire string quartets on long hauls.
