When Will NZ's New 777 Operate To Rarotonga?

I hope to make another trip back to the wonderful Cook Islands on NZ. I was looking at NZ schedules this spring and they are showing the 767 as being the plane from LAX to the Cook Islands (and onwards to New Zealand). When are the 777's taking over the route? I assume the 767's are going to be phased-out.
Maybe SK can get one for that EWR - OSL route. footinmouth

I think the first NZ 777's will replace the 744 on the AKL-SFO route. I don't know what NZ's 767 phase-out will be. Maybe they'll wait until they start taking delivery of the 787's.

NZ is likely to continue to operate service to destinations like the Cook Islands (and other stops on the Coral Route) with the 763s for many years to come....the 777s are not replacing the 763s on a one for one basis. The 763 will stay in service with NZ until replaced with the 787.

The 777 is probably offers too much capacity for most Coral Route flights and NZ plans to use the 777 initially on higher demand routes such as AKL to HKG.

If I remember correctly NZ are going to be giving the remaining B763s cabin a mini make over. When NZ receives their first B787 I think NZ will still have 5 B763s in the fleet.

btw I dont think it flies directly from LAX to Rarotonga. I flew the opposite direction and we had to land in PPT before continuing to LAX

It is even capable of receiving a 747, as NZ used to operate there with a 742 back in the good old days. tongue

My guess would be, not until the 787-8's go into service. It might depend on where you are flying into RAR from. If it is from LAX then it will be a long haul aircraft. From AKL it is long haul type on the days the flight goes onto LAX, otherwise it is an A320.

With the A340's slow climb I wouldn't be surprised if she needs more runway than the more powerful 744. Don't get me wrong I like flying the A340, but she isn't the most powerful bird out there!!

The LAX-PPT-RAR route used to get 742's and the odd 744. 763's have allowed NZ to increase flights on these routes. The 744 has done the odd flight to RAR in the last couple of years but only operating AKL-RAR-AKL, the 744's go to APW over Christmas!

Yes I think in general the A340's does need more runway than the 744!
