How Well Could 787-8/-9 Handle Short Haul?

Airlines such as BA use (for example) the 767-300/ER on routes like LHR-DUS and LHR-FCO etc which are a fraction of the aircraft's full range.

Will the 787-8/-9(/-10?) be geared very much towards long haul or can they handle short hauls like this economically?

I acknowlege that the 878-3 is the short haul version however with this kind of operation the airlines need the flexibility of the longer range varient for seasonal long hauls.
