In Amadeus I see these flights operated with LXOD 2902 OP flight numbers for instance. These are still operated by Saab 2000 but now from Darwin Air. I flew flyBaboo and Darwin last week from Lugano, spectacular airport and approach, indeed impossible to do with any jet I think.

Sad news, the S2000 IMHO is the best looking twin-prop out there.

Is that a wise decision? The Saabs are excellent planes, and the Avros are fuel guzzlers. Are there still so many people with a biased opinion against turboprops?

To be honest I never liked very much the 2000, it was more comfortable than the 340 but lacked 'personality'.
I think SAAB made a major strategic mistake in developing that kind of turboprop. It didn't look very modern compared to CRJ 200 for the average passenger.

It is faster than other turbo-prop (ATR, Dash 8) but slower than the jet and in the same time is smaller than the ATR and Dash 8.

Not a very good product (but the service on board with Crossair was perfect and F/A were always pretty  Smile)

Indeed,

also synchronisation of the fleet,
When the summer TT starts LX will only operate ARJ's A32S and A330/A340.

The operation of a single Avro is certainly more expensive then the S2000,
but maintaining a large fleet of the same type is better then operating different types but small quantities of aircraft.

The main reason LX took the ARJ's as a replacement is due to the good leasing cost and synchronisation with the LH regional fleet.

Good for the profits, but off course less appealing for enthousiasts like us...

I agree. Whilst I love flying and I fly regularly, my worst ever flight was on an LX Saab 2000; Manchester to Basel in a wicked thunderstorm. The turbulence was such that objects flew 30cm above the height of the seat tops. This was in the era when Swiss were charging for F&D internally within Europe- you pay CHF 5 for a beer (and you're not on an LCC) and you end up with a CHF 100 dry-cleaning bill!

One lady kissed the tarmac a la The Pope on arrival at BSL.

Still, LX dropping MAN/BSL causes myself and my firm some problems.  Sad

Woops, I can imagine!

My worst CB's where on approach on La guardia NY, and even that 735 smashed us all up and the CB's showed our Boeing all the corners of the NY airspace, so I can imagine how it must be in a S2000!

Don't worry. BSL-MAN will return sooner or later.

As for the moment, I would definitely take easyJet's service Basel-Liverpool and then take the train (to Huddersfield I guess  Wink ) if you don't need a same day return.

If you need a same day return, SN Brussels offers good connections out of BSL.

I've only had the pleasure of working on one Saab 2000 while on the ramp at MAN, HB-IYE, in Crossair colours. We used to get the odd S2000, but the route is usually ERJ145's.
I'll miss them, as it was something different to do then the ERJ's.

So was the thunderstorm the Saabs fault? Would it have been sunny and smooth if Swiss would have used an ATR or a 737 to Manchester? All my flights on the Saab 2000 were extremely smooth, my impression so far is the Saab handles turbulence better then the Fokker 50 or Dash 8, you probably would have had your worst flight in ANY aircraft in that thunderstorm.

VLM loves their Fokker 50s pretty much, although it is a bit slower, the F-50s are also built from 1988-1997 so not much older then the Saab, and with the good support it gets from Fokker Services they are set for another few years. Don't worry about the Saab 2000, it found its niece more then I'd expect; Eastern, Carpatian, Air Botnia, Portugalia, Darwin Air, Lithuanian, OLT all seem to like them and some of them might pick up some of the Swiss frames.

I flew the Saab 2000 for a bit over 2 years at Crossair and SWISS. It is a bit sad, but all things must come to an end. It is a terrific plane. Not perfect by a long shot, but still better than all the other turboprops. It was way ahead of its time in terms of technology, but was beaten out in the marketplace by lower tech jets because of their perceived advantages.

I hope they find good homes. For me the Saab 2000 and Crossair are synonymous. Seeing them fly for other airlines just doesn't look right.

I flew them in LUG and for that type of airport, as well as BRN and LCY, it was a terrific airplane.

This is not true. EMB-120 Brasilias have a window in the lavatory (the ones fitted with a fwd lav anyway).


25 SWISSER : I know what you mean... What climb rates could a S2000 actually take? I always believed they where not far from Jet performance.
