New LCC Concourse (H) At AMS

Today AMS has opened a new concourse, called H, wich can be used by LCC. The concourse does not have any shops, bars, restaurants, nor jetways. The LCC can use the concourse to make it cheaper to fly to AMS and handle the flight quicker.

Still this does not solve one of the main barrier for real low cost operations at AMS, i.e. the long taxi times between gate and runway.

Also, not putting retail outlets and bars in this concourse does not make economical sense to me, since these facitilies would be another very important revenue source for the airport.

So now what if your plane gets delayed by say an hour?? You'll end up walking all the way up and down this H-pier and half the airport to find a toilet and/or get yourself a coffee.

I like the idea, Schiphol once again shows it is inventive and competitive but I hope they will still build toilets, cause to me that seems to be an elemental human right..

It' s not as bad as it seems; ALL facilities are at the entrance of the H-pier. Shops, restaurants (full service, bar, McD etc), toilets and even the hotel is closeby. Passengers just have to proceed to their gate just b4 boarding. The H-pier only has 7 gates, and according to Schiphol, passengers will not spend more than 10 minutes in the H-pier after their flight has been called. In case the flight will be delayed and passengers need to return to the waiting lounge, they just have to walk for a few minutes, maybe not even more than 5 minutes.

The boarding call is made at least 30 minutes before departure, and once in the H-pier, passengers will not spend more than 10 minutes their before going to the a/c.

There doesn't seem to be a reason for AMS to be slot restricted, and I don't think it is. They have plenty of runway space and plenty of gates. Perhaps you are talking about landing fees?

I think you forget one tiny little detail: POLITICS!!!

Schiphol could have a lot more flights, but due to noise regulations they can not. Also, Schiphol may have a lot of runways, but due it is close to the sea so the wind varies a lot more then at CDG (for instance). This limits the number of runways used as well.

Like Peter already indicated, Schiphol is capacity restricted, due to noise regulations. Information can be found on http://www.slotcoordination.nl , declared capacity for the Winter of 2005/2006 can be viewed here:

Have you ever been at AMS? It is not as bad as it seems. The H-pier entrance is right there where the G-pier is, right next to the huge lounge. Passengers will be waiting in this lounge, where there are dozens of restaurants, bars, etc. Basically, I always wait in these lounges too before walking to the gate as there is way more to do - and I also found myself to be spending more money when in the lounge then in the pier (when having a coffee in a nice bar).

I'll be at AMS next thursday, will try to make some pictures.

Hey, what do you expect? It's for low cost carriers.... If you don't want to pay for your ticket you cannot expect a toilet can you?

That is a reason to avoid AMS if you can. Sometimes it takes 15 - 20 minutes to come to the gate from this stupid Polderbaan. Who invented this remote runway anyway? IMO there was no need for that.

I recon we found the ONLY person in the netherlands who has never heard about complaining neighbours. AMS needed an extra runway, and this was the place where the least people would have been affected. So it actually makes quite a lot of sense, since AMS is restricted by noise. It's on the news every year, especially at the end of the year.........

Wrong!  no  I just don't like this NIMBY crap. If you cannot stand the Schiphol noise just move to another place. It's cheaper to live in Groningen anyway. And who cares if you complain overthere. You won't have a lot of noise from Eelde.... It's the typical Dutch poldermodel or Balkenende politics. If AMS wants to keep up with the big boys it will have to take more traffic, thus producing more noise (and we don't need more runways for that). And if we want to keep mobile in The Netherlands we need more asphalt for the motorways, that's where they should have send the road builders to. But that is another discussion I guess...  Big grin

But at least we will get a fast railway line to go to Brussels. We just need some trains now to run on them. But they have been delayed by a few years, which is rather large even by NS standards.

And the next cock-up willbe the zuiderzee line. Or that super fast BUS that travels at 200+ kph. Yeah, sure....

Is it me, or are priorities wrong here? Best we can hope for that would actually be usefull would be a spitsstrook. Oooh, and of course motorway speed limit of 80 around city centers.

If it would not be so hard to move here, I'd move out. Big grin

I don't think the people living around AMS will care if it's keeping up with the big boys or not.
DUS is having the same sort of problems with landing restrictions, I don't know all the details.

I think most airport in densly populated areas have the same problems. But it is the Dutch government that is more sensitive for complaints about noise in AMS than other governments (in Europe). Probably DUS is having the same problem with the Nordrhein Westfalen Landesregierung. And I do have more understanding for the people living in Düsseldorf areas like Lohausen where the landing gears almost hit the roofs of the houses. There is no comparable situation in Amsterdam.

Website is showing easyJet already operating from there today, as well as Jet2, bmibaby, SkyEurope and Thomsonfly.

To me AMS is still the best airport in Europe when it comes to getting around to gates, etc...the transfers are great, and dont complain about a new pier, it could be a new terminal all together...although, if it means hearing "MIND YOUR STEP" even more, then it could get annoying, lol

Zuiderzee line AFAIK has been shelved (which seriously pissed off Almere, who stated it as one of their conditions for further expanding the city to take up more people fleeing crime in Amsterdam).

More likely Luton. Amsterdam (London), so they can offer Amsterdam-London for 1 Euro and just drive you around Luton for 10 minutes in an airport bus  Smile
