In the 80's AM had one DC-10-30, the "Jose Maria Morelos" with registrations XA-RVY / N3878P. The difference with the other DC-10's in the fleet was that this one had a white fuselage vs the polished metal fuselage used so much in the entire fleet. I believe they called it "El Palomo". Anybody knows why? I appreciate it.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the reason behind it being white is that it was the official airplane of the "50 Aniversario". AM tends to paint their aircraft white for special occasions, just like they did with that 767-300 they once had which they called "Espiritu del 88".

But, I'm not for sure. I was a little kid back then.

I'm pretty sure that particular dc-10 came from Alitalia, thus they just slapped on the orange paint.

I remember hearing that there was still Alitalia markings in the galley and things like that, from people that used to work for AMX back in those days  Wink

It began it´s life with Alitalia as I-DYNA, returned to MacDonell-Douglas as N3878P. Arrived to Aeromexico with that registration and then turned to XA-RIY. It then went to Skyjet, Excalibur and Viasa (V2-LEH with the 3 carriers), then to TAESA as XA-TFM and finished it´s life with continental as N39081.

Ah... so that's why it was the white oddball of the group. I always thought it was painted for a special reason. Its just that all those special brochures that were made by AeroMexico to celebrate its 50th for some reason always depicted that particular DC-10 (The white one!). I've seen it wearing the special stickers on the tail and the fuselage too.

Really? that's the one I never flew on. From LAX, as a kid, I would notice that AM would only send their DC-10-15s, namely; "Anahuac" and "Independencia". Never did I see one of their 30s here. On the other hand, TIJ always received the 30s, but this one not as much as the other two: "Ciudad de Mexico" and "Castillo de Chapultepec". I never got to fly on "Jose Maria Morelos" and I used to be on them quite often. I think this one was used more often on the European runs...

...and "Castillo de Chapultepec" was my all time favorite. As a little kid, I used think there was pandas inside a castle somewhere in Mexico City! Big grin He he he... (you have to be Mexican to ge it!)

Just out of curiosity, how many seats did AM's DC10's have?

Back in 1984 and shortly before its first bankruptcy (1988) AM DC-10's were fitted with 301 seats.

I remember they were modified around 1991 and fitted with 278 seats.

Wow, that's a lot of seats for a non-charter airline. Was it just one, or two classes? I was just reading the Airlife's Airliners DC10 book, that had a 2-class seating with business class at 40 inch. Was that about right?
