MX Resumes MIA-MEX

Mexicana is resuming Miami-Mexico City, a route they never have been able to perform strong on because of their refusal to operate more than one daily flight while AA and AM operate three and four, respectively. They replaced MIA-MEX this past July with a third daily MIA-CUN flight. Though with the recent devastaion in Cancun, it makes sense that they are reintroducing this service while reducing MIA-CUN back to 2x daily.

Poorly worded PR:

Although some people might consider that the defficient language of the press release linked by Mark is quite inconsequential, I believe it is a shame that an airline that proclaims itself a "market leader" and "Mexico's no. 1 carrier" is unable to word a press release properly. My interns at the office would have been able to come up with something much better. No offense to anyone, but this Ms. Theresa Bravo should be fired, and this Fleishman-Hillard communications agency should be replaced. This just goes to show how careless and inept the management team of MX can get and, sadly, conveys an impression of MX that is not necessarily correct.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I believe that the timing of the flights and the codeshare with AA will help MX turn a profit. Good to see MX resuming MEX-MIA.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Agree. This is a route where besides Mexican and American passengers, they should try to go after more Central and South Americans. Offer lower fares than the competition, and connecting opportunities to places like: Caracas, Quito, and Bogota, etc.....

Good to see MX restart MIA-MEX... I don't know why they push this route a little harder and make it work for them! I mean ...I would consider it to be an important route and really testament to showing how strong of "national" carrier it is amongst other Mexican airlines. Why not offer some "Click" LCC service from CUN to MIA instead? w/ perhaps 3 Click MIA-CUN and 2 MX MIA-MEX. I mean seeing how big the LCC popularity is in the US and how popular CUN is for tourists (Obviously speaking PRE-WILMA and after Cancun recooperates)... im sure it could work. How hard would it be for MX to get U.S. approval for Click to the U.S.?

"The new route
will operate daily departing Mexico City at 7:00 a.m. and returning to Miami
at 6:15 p.m.
"

What does this mean? Returning from Miami at 615pm? Does the plane sit all day or does it turn off of another flight? If the latter, there must be some change in another flight, no?

There is a lot of premium demand on MIA-CUN. No reason to make it Click. MIA-CUN is an important business market, in addition to a leisure market.

Interesting to see the response of MX to what appears to be a serious treat of Aviacsa to fight for the route. Aviacsa wants to fly MEX-MIA-MEX non-stop, and if MX did not re-start the route, they could have lost it forever!!

With only one daily flight, MX has never done good on the route. This time they want to cater the Mexican market with an early departure from Mexico and a late departure from Miami. Lets see how things go!!

Fares would have to be amazingly cheap to really drive passengers to choose a de-tour on MX over up to 6 daily nonstop flights between BOG and MIA, mostly on wide-body aircraft, and not to mention over much more attractive connecting possibilities like those provided by CM and TA in PTY and SJO respectively. Same goes for CCS.

I guess now MX should think maybe in alternative routes from South Florida, like MEX-FLL, it didn't work with AM probably because it wasn't the right marketing. I know many Mexican people who live sin that area and complained of the AM schedule at that time. So they use to fly with AA via DFW or drive down to MIA and make non-stop. Probably also TLC-MIA would be a nice route. Click is doing good with TLC-CUN so maybe Mexicana should take advantage of that market where still there is no too much competition.

It wasn't marketing. The flight filled up pretty well. The problem was that the business travelers aren't going to FLL, they are going to MIA, and that isn't changing, as the huge majority Mexican companies with large Miami operations are in the Brickell and Coral Gables areas. Spirit Airlines will be launching FLL-MEX service in June 2006, which will be satisfy market demand.

I agree somehow but well, i live in Fort Lauderdale area and if you just could know there are plenty of mexicans who work in this area and cities like Boca Raton, Sunrise and even West Palm Beach.. I guess if Spirit Airlines is doing it next year is because they for sure think there is a market there...that means MX or AM should be there too... By the way Fort Myers is also full of mexicans... Maybe in the future Florida is going to be full of connections to Mexico like California and Texas are now for us... Maybe someday Tampa, West Palm Beach, Fort Myers are going to be the next markets after Miami, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.. that is 6 airports...

Do you guys know How many Californian airports have flights to Mexico?

OK. i found it in SABRE. IT is only scheduled until 30NOV!!!! what is going to happen aftet that?!?! they are going to discontinue it again?

The schedule is

MX301 MEX - MIA 7AM - 11AM
MX300 MIA - MEX 605PM - 825PM

Also, I noticed that all the MX flights MIA to CUN and MEX are closed (blocked) for sale for JAN-MAR, but open after April. What is that about?
something is going to happen with MX and their schedule for those months?

unfortunately, i guess you are right. I didn't found it either anywhere after november 30. I guess it was just an aspirin to compensate the low season to CUN due hurricane Wilma. So their pax to CUN were bound through MEX. Now...those are bad news..we thought they were back to MIA...

I also just watched a TV commercial in Azteca America network sponsored by the Mexican Tourism Department about Aermoexico news and their 4th daily non-stops to Mexico City... and saying visit Mexico..
Guess MX gave up here.

Mexicana was not allowed to compete with Aeromexico on
this route per CINTRA.

When they did have the route, initially, they did better than Aeromexico.

Years later, they can only start from scratch but I am certain will do well as they always do in whatever market
they enter.

I was at Miami International Airport today, and i talked to one operations rep of Mexicana. I asked him about the non-stop flight to Mexico City and told me that, no, they don't know yet what willl happen after novemeber 30. He explained me that many, many pax have asked the airline what will happen because they stop at the airport to buy tickets for X-Mas dates or for dates after and they just sale through CUN.
But he explained me he heard rumors that probably next week they will confirm if it's going to continue. He explained that MX in that airport usually at the last time make "unexpected" changes, so for sure they can suddenly say they will add the non-stop after that. Bad thing that many people seeing they dont have the flight for december has bougth tickets with AM.

The nonstop flights are now in Sabre..open for sale after 1DEC. 615pm MIA-MEX / 7AM MEX-MIA
what is funny is that they codeshare with AA on flights at almost the same times.
