Quoting USADreamliner (Thread starter): Because they are members of Star Alliance UA "borrow" the slogan, or they paid for it, or is just simply a coincidence?
Probably is a coincidence. Varig and other brazilian airlines does not register the rights on their slogans. Brazil has a publishing regulator (CONAR) that only avoid the use of the same campaign. Slogans here are not usually copyright protected as they change it from time to time. Varig nowadays slogan is " Varig - The Brazilian Star" and keep a strong message " If you are flying with other airlines, Varig will bring you back "
Varig marketing is not so strong nowadays due to the lack of cash.
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Well before "Time to fly" There was "Life is a journey travel it well"
I have heard that slogan for a car and insurance commercial.
I find the new slogan handy when go to work.
"Time to Try"
"Time to Lie" about there connections and the lack of a meal choice.
"Time to Sigh" when we are late
"Time to Try again" when we have a mechanical.
"Time to Fry" when you are trapped in a packed 747-400 with no air conditioning.
Lower your expectations! You will always be pleasantly surprised!
