SXM Expanding Runway?

They are expanding the runway and also adding a taxi way!

I don't think that statement is quite true. What I know (told by employees and spotters at the sunset beach bar last month when I was there) is that the runway extension is taking place on runway 27 which is the one shown in the pic. They are reclaiming land from Simpson's Lagoon, which is a dutch especiallity by the way...

There's no way to extend the runway at the Maho Beach side, simply because the road between the beach and the runway is the only road access to that part of the island. There's plenty of space to reclaim at the other side of the airport by the lagoon.

But the plan certainly exists.

Whether this will actually be built I don't know. But it seems that the other end of the runway is already being extended.

Mabe they will build an underground acess road to the other side. Dreadful. I hope this never happens
