NWA On The Way To MZJ

I was on flight tracker today and noticed XJ starting to send the Avros to the boneyards, anyone know the numbers being retired so far? Also notice NW has a 747-400 going to MZJ too anyone know how many of them are going (I assume the are lease rejections)

A little news on the NWA front, the company gave to union leaders a contract that states that NWA wants to outsource all ramp and counter work in all of the out stations, basically in every city except DTW and MSP. The ramp will be outsourced to a company called Rampco. This is news that I got to me today, looks as if the first round of "cuts" will be by late November and the rest after the first of the year.

Today's flight is the fifth RJ85 sent to the desert. Three were sent down on Oct 30th and one on Nov 1st. Any word on what the regs of the RJ85s being retired are?

The 744 is suprising. Recent schedule changes have reduced 744 usage. JFK-NRT cancel gave +1.5 744. Then LAX-NRT have -1 744. Overall they gained 0.5 free 744. Somehow they squeezed 1 whole plane out of their system. Either to expand their schedule future or to reject that airplane.

Maybe this is a Dirty Harry gesture to 744 lessors while NWA bargains for lower lease rates...

Well it looks like another 744 is on it's way today to MZJ. Hopefully this is just a temporary measure and they will return to service soon. Interesting note, they are at FL430, not an altitude you see the 744 at often.

I'm not sure when the LAX-NRT switch was supposed to happen, but I saw a 742 at LAX in late October (10/22) at gate. Did they switch back LAX-NRT to a 742 that they own and send a 744 to the desert?

With so many planes headed into storage I would think that NW would have to cut routes/frequency. Is this happening?

NWA1 & 2 are 744's . I read that they wanted to get the -200 off this route because of high fuel prices.

There are three total -400s going to Marana - the one out of DTW on 11/5, the second on 11/7 via PDX, and the third today, 11/8, again via PDX. These flights via PDX operated inbound from NRT as NWA6, and the outbound flt 5 was cancelled both days. The three aircraft are fleet numbers 6302/03/04 from memory. The -400 usage is reduced due to NWA17/18 going away, and the extra Saturday NRT-MSP-NRT flight being suspended for a while. One -400 operates NRT-GUM right now, and this will revert to a -200. I haven't looked very closely at any other changes in their operating patterns, but I would presume that NRT-HNL-NRT would revert to a -200 for one of the flts. Not sure what the plans are for NRT-LAX-NRT. Yes, they fill a -400, but yields are not very high for anyone on this route - so I would expect to see an A330-200 on it before too long.

One surprise today was that one 757-200 came back out of Marana. I think the fleet number was 5647. I would imagine that there will be the occaisional return to service as operational needs dictate, and also as and when they hammer out lower lease rates. The DC10s are down to 12 right now, but I don't know if any will return to service.

They usually do, you can even track flights that carry NFL teams if you find the fllight number.

With reference to reply #5, the XJ RJ85s in MZJ as of today are:

7501 / 03 / 05 / 08 / 09 / 10 / 12.

Of course, they go to the expense of painting 7501 in the new colors and then park it......

With reference to #17, the -400s are being parked due to the the lease rates. I have heard that the leasing company that owns these three aircraft are baulking at the idea of reduced rates, so NWA took them out of service and are effectively walking away from them. It is really all down to whether the leasing company and NWA can come to a consensual agreement about lease rates whether these aircraft come back in service or whether the lease company can place them elsewhere. NWA are of course hoping that the leasing company blinks first. They are doing the same thing with all the aircraft they are parking. I think that they may have a hard time trying to renegotiate much lower leases for the A319's and A320's which are in high demand in such areas as India and Asia right now.

With reference to #18, the 98xx series flight numbers used in ferrying the aircraft to MZJ are maintenance ferry flight numbers and they would not show on the NWA website. The same 98xx series are used for maint ferries world-wide. The NFL flights, and all other charter flights are typically in the 99xx series, and I was not aware that they were showing in NWA.com.

As of today, there are 18 DC9-30s, 3 DC9-40s and 5 DC9-50s at MZJ.
There are 6 A319s in storage, going up to 10 by the end of the week.
There are 9 A320s in storage reducing to 4 by the end of the week.
There are 11 B757-200s in storage, 5 55xx series and 6 56xx series.
There are a total of 13 DC10-30s still in service, 4 B747-200 passenger acft and 13 B747-400's. No B757-300s or A330s are in storage or planned to be.
