Unfortunate or not, JL has released a statement that all 30 747-classics will be gone by end of 2009. This includes pax and freight variants. It appears gas-guzzling 747-classics are taking a toll on the bottom line.
Suffice to say it Boeing will most likely be getting a big 777 order to replace those 747-classics and not to mention a 747-freighter contract too. 744 freighter could come in the form of new-builds or conversions. A 777LRF order wouldn't be a shock too, as it fits in the replacement timeline. Unfortunately, the 747Advanced would be out of the running if this schedule is to be met.

JL will take some pax B747-400 out of service and convert them to -400SF (Freighter) aircraft.
The 744 will be replaced by 773ER (e.g. see LHR/FRA services).
They will most probably also announce more new build -400F aircraft soon.

I would be a massive disappointment if JAL wouldn´t order the 747 Advanced. They are very late if they would want A380s instead. 773s alone won´t make sense for the top end of the JAL fleet.
That the 747 Classics will be replaced by late 2009 is not too much a surprise. The youngest of these aircraft will be past 20 years old by then. Many are used domestically or on shorter routes, so that means high cycles.

Both NH & JL are downsizing because to them carrying economy passenger really doesn't do much to shore up the bottom line. The cabin layout of the 773ER for both companies pretty much has the same number of seats in first and business while the reduction is mainly in the economy cabin. While it maybe a downgrade in capacity, both NH & JL are perfectly happy to off-load some of those ultra-low fare package tour seats. All at the same time burning less gas and paying less landing fees with the 773ER vs. 744/743.

Only a few of the B 747-400s will be converted into B 747-400SFs. Guess the B 777 can replace the B 747 classics and the B 747 Advanced can replace the B 747-400s.

I am just amazed that any airline still has such a large fleet of classics .
Please don't flame me , I am not criticizing the aircraft or the airline - I just thought almost all the big 747 operators had retired or seriously reduced their 742/743 fleets . Is there anyone other 'flag carrier' out there still with a substantial fleet of 'classics'

I would be very surprised if JAL was not one of the launch customers for the 747advanced. Very agressive plan to replace 30 aircraft by 2009, might take them a little longer.....
