You mean the southwest airlines incident a few months ago? Please don't go scaring around people with false plane crashes. I'll be watching the news and will post more info.

north of Philadelphia.

Local police and firefighters were assisting military personnel at the crash site.

Interesting AirT85. I've been listening to JFK Live feed from RealPlayer the last couple of hours, and i've heard quite a few Aircraft landing @ LGA come in on JFK approach........thats unusual.....dont know if this is at all related to this reported incident. Just wanted to add my pennies worth.   How close is LGA & PHL anyway?

Thanks, i think that is the one! Wow...im glad it wasnt commercial. I mean its awful to have any kind of plane crash. And Lord be witht he family of the pilot, but i am glad it wasnt a loaded 747 or something, that wouldve been a much larger loss of life. And im not saying that this pilot's life wasnt important, well you know what i mean! Well May the Lord be witht he family of the downed pilot.

06/18/00

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A military plane crashed during an air show at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Sunday afternoon, police said.
The F-14 Tomcat, with two crew aboard, was performing at the Willow Grove 2000 Sounds of Freedom show, according to radio station KYW 1040. The plane went down in a wooded area, police said.

The fate of the crew was not immediately known.

The military base is 15 miles north of Philadelphia.

OK, its on the news. It crashed at about 4:30. Demonstrating a landing wave-off maneuver...for the crowd, when the plane smashed intot he woods. No parachutes seen...two pilots onboard. Thats all ig ot off the news. Critter, PHL and LGA are about 90 miles apart. American lists PHL-JFK as 94 miles so LGA shouldnt be too much shorter then that. The lfight sbound for LGA going to JFK may just be because of the weather coming through...

OK, they said that the plane came within 50 feet of houses, that two people are dead. Police will not say whether or not it was both pilots, saying the Navy will have to comfirm that for the press...

In the latest briefing, the Navy confirmed that the pilot and navigator were in fact killed, but that there were no injuries, no buildings involved, and the fire was out.

Videotape shows what appears to be the two pilots attempting to eject, but it was too late.

God be with the pilots and their families...

I saw the video. After a slow "dirty" (gear & flaps down) pass, the F14 simulated a wave off. He pitched up and turned at approx. a 90 degree angle to the right and it appears he just pulled to many g's and the combination of angle of attack, steep turn, and slow speed doomed him. He quickly rolled inverted, remained there for a second or two, and the continued to roll to the right ending up hitting the ground at a 90 degree left roll and about 15-20 degrees nose down pitch attitude. This appears to me to be the classic accelerated stall and a perfect "below VMC" (below the minimum controllable airspeed) demonstration.

Hi, OK i got an update fomr the 11 oclock news, lol, i kept going back between all 5 news channels up here. The inverted roll waqs part of the routine, an aviation expert on News10 said that it looked like the left engine quit out and the pilots were trying to couter-act that, but he said that has not been confirmed or anything. Thats just his guess. The plane went down in the woods behind the local sewage treatment plant. Both pilot's are dead as you already said. The F-14 is based in Oceana Virginia. The FAA and NTSB are on there way to the crash scene tonight, if the weather holds out, which it should for otmorrow morning, they should be out there. There were about 5 people who caught the crash on video tape.

Does anyone know what it's like to handle something like an F14 after an engine failure? The thrust line is pretty near the fore/aft axis, so is there much yaw at all? I know he was slow, but I'm curious.

Does anyone know what model of the F-14 it was? On the F-14D it has a version of the GE F110 engine that powers some of the Air Force's F-16C/D models. There have been some problems with these engines from what I have read in some Air Force Safety magazines.
