Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel today said that the work on the new airport at adjoining Navi Mumbai would begin in 2009.

Patel announced this at a meeting held at Mantralaya, which was also attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, an official release said.

"The new airport at Navi Mumbai would help reduce the load on airports at Mumbai," the minister said adding, the Pune airport would become operational round the clock from December 12.

On the same day, international service would begin from Pune, he said and added that Rs 100 crore would be spent on strengthening runway at the Pune airport.

Similarly, priority was being accorded for development work of the Aurangabad airport, Patel said. "You will see quality improvement at Aurangabad within five-six months", he added.

The Centre would also spend Rs 100 crore for development of Nagpur airport, Patel said.

The Airports Authority of India would extend all help to the state government for operating inter-divisional air service, Patel said adding this would help industry and tourism.

Exactly. Where is the land in Navi Mumbai ?
Reg. timeframe, there is so much paperwork and feasibility studies that itself would take years. Right now there is no estimate according to me!

I distinctively remember that Rudy had once said there is no need for another airport in Mumbai and that the present one after modernization would be able to handle the load.
Do plans change alongwith the government ?
