Mesaba F/A's Fight On Board Flight

The evening news reported that a Mesaba Bae146 traveling from MEM to ORD was brought back to the gate and BOTH flight attendants removed from the aircraft for fighting. Interviews with the passengers said the incident started with a passenger that had bad that would not fit in the overhead. The pax with the bag said one f/a was assisting him when the other f/a intervened and the two f/a's exchanged nasty comments. This was said to occur during taxi out. The Captain then made an announcement that the flight was returning to the gate. All pax deboarded and two hours after scheduled dept. they were re-crewed with new F/A's. News said Mesaba was investigating incident.

Anyone with more info?

Wow, it's hilarious! Here's the article! It was on one of their AVRO's. Mesaba had an employee conferance call yesterday also, announcing pay cuts.

Years ago I was on a flight (can't remember the airline) but I remember that the cabin crew made an announcement that their contract prevented them from lifting bags for passengers. Are there airlines with this clause in their FAs contracts? Does Mesaba have a clause like this? If so, is this what they could be fighting over, especially since it was a large bag?

There is no clause in our contracts about not lifting bags. It is about no insurance coverage. If we get hurt by lifting a passengers bag it is not considered part of our job description, therefore we cannot get paid for a on the job injury. That is why most FA's are reluctant to assist with bags going in the overhead bins. You just never know how much someone's bag weighs. Cheers.

I had a feeling that had to be it. Does Mesaba have the "Ala Cart" service where you leave oversized bags at the door and pick them up from a cart at the destination?

With the paycuts, bankruptcy of their parent, and other fun stuff going on, it's a wonder this hasn't happened more often.  Sad

I was on a FL flight TYS-ATL in 2000 where two FA's obviously got into some kind of an argument before the flight, but the tension stuck around as pax were boarding. They tried to be quiet about it, but I was paying close attention. It got the point where they were calling each other "b*tches" and exchanging nasty looks w/ each other (one male on female FA). Hilarious! The other FA clearly knew something was going one as she stayed as far away as possible.

Events like this are uncalled for and the people involved should be seriously reprimanded for their actions. It's extremely unprofessional and it makes for a very uncomfortable and unsafe environment!

If the particular F/A's don't like their jobs...then they should just get another job! Apparently, job ethics do not exist amongst the airlines.

I have seen F/A's take their anger out on unprovoking passengers. I make every effort to take down the name of the crewmember and let corporate know about it.

I've also seen racial profiling on Horizon Air flights and that was uncalled for. Random screening...Bullshit!!!

How many flights are in a day and we are talking about "2" flight attendants. Many of us have ethics. Many of us still have a passion for our jobs. Many of us are sick of the ones in the article just as you are.

I once sent a note to AA about a certain flight attendant that was spending time comforting a Navy sailor that had to leave his family for duty. He was balling through the entire flight.

I sent a message to Horizon Air corporate about the comedy relief I had on one flight between SMF-BOI.

Believe me...I send lots of positive letters about excellent service and attitudes. There are many, many more positives than negatives.

I'm sorry if my message was conceived as too negative.

Many thanks for clarifying. The people who do go above and beyond only want a thank you. Just some acknowledgement and respect. It goes so far. That and some eye contact and a please and thank you on board will always get you better service .  Smile

Flight attendants are extremely independent...and the sure fire way to create a confrontation is for one F/A to try and "assist" another F/A who obviously has a situation under control.
example: F/A: (a) tells passenger I will be happy to help you find a place for your bag...and begins searching for a spot.
F/A: (b) comes along grabs bag and tells passenger..."this bad boy is being checked.."
I can certainly understand tensions that are created leg after leg, day after day with someone you dont like...you've just gotta suck it up and keep from giving each other "a blue rinse."

I have a hard time believing this. Any on the job injury is subject to workman's comp, usually, and lifting a bag is not outside the realm of possibility for a F/A. Winnable in a grievance.

I know a caterer who got fired for shoving a Mesaba F/A. Apparently she wanted another bottle of water and he wasn't going to give it, because he is a control freak. So some argument ensued and he shoved her.

Are you certain of this, or is it just rumor? I assume CO's coverage is based on TX law and I don't know what the TX statutes say, but I do know that some other states (employee compensation) would provide coverage for any activity performed on the job - even outside the job description or beyond direct supervisory directions/orders.

Nope... XJ ARJ's are treated as mainline flights from a service perspective... that being said, if your carry-on bag is too large to fit and they can't stow it in the closets in the cabin it is checked on to your final destination by the gate agent and you get to reclaim it at baggage claim at your final dest not planeside...
