I know there have been discussions about this before, but what are the latest opinions on what will happen to American Airlines' ZRH operations once Swiss enters the Star Alliance? Swiss is already code sharing with UA on IAD-ZRH (UA), ORD-ZRH (LX), and LAX-ZRH (LX).

Granted, American retimed its JFK-ZRH flight to a 9:00PM departure as part of its original code share with LX, so it offers the latest departure out of the NYC area to ZRH (LX departs at 6:30 and CO from EWR earlier) but DFW-ZRH? Will it last?

American has served ZRH on and off for a long time (it actually never stopped flying there, just the JFK-ZRH route was dropped and then restarted and the ORD-ZRH route was shifted to DFW-ZRH).

AA has one daily round trip between DFW and ZRH. As of now, I don't know of any plans for Swiss to begin DFW service, but that could change anytime. So, AFAIK, AA will continue the DFW-ZRH service.

We don't know if we'll continue to codeshare with Swiss once they join the Star Alliance. I've been hearing that AA is looking to return the JFK departure time to 5:20 pm in March 2006, but I haven't been able to find that in our RES system yet. That could be an indication that the codesharing will end soon.

Because with LX entering STAR, it might not be in the interest of AA to continue this route....

Why not shift it to BRU?

Sabena used to operate a daily DFW-BRU till 2001 and AA is getting more and more tied up with SN, especially since they will soon be their only option for much of central Europe?

That was being considered, but only if LX were to end their MIA service as a result of the codeshare. However, despite ending the AA codeshare, Lufthansa/Swiss have no plans on ending Miami-Zurich service. MIA is Swiss' second best performing station in North America after JFK. There were concerns that without the AA codeshare, Swiss would lose a significant amount of connecting traffic. However, Lufthansa will be placing their code on MIA-ZRH (it will be one of only two long haul Swiss routes LH will codeshare on, the othering being LAX-ZRH) and has suspended MIA-MUC in order to make sure that MIA-ZRH can continue performing.

DFW-ZRH is actually AA's best international performing route, financially on a per flight basis, from Dallas. While the flight is heavily dense on connections, they come from both sides. I think AA will keep it going.

I even heard that AA was investigating either BOS or MIA from BRU, in codeshare with SN, but that was a rumour in may/june.

It's not. MIA-EZE is AA's most profitable. MAH4546 was saying that DFW-ZRH is AA's best performing international route from Dallas.  Smile

DFW-ZRH is HEAVILY reliant upon connecting traffic at both ends of the route. When the AA/LX codeshare goes away, and LX renegotiates the prorate agreements with AA (at the urging of LH), I'm quite certain that AA will find it economically disadvantageous to continue to flow a large volume of passenger traffic via ZRH. Likewise, while JFK-ZRH is a sizeable route, the new pressure from a combined LX/LH (Star) sales effort to compete against AA rather than with them as a partner will make that route difficult for AA to continue. IMO, AA's days in ZRH are numbered. Sad, but that's the competitve reality of the situation.

AA would be wise to investigate the feasibility of DFW-BRU, as the partnership with SN Brussels seems solid. Likewise, I'd bet that BOS-BRU would be an ideal route for AA's wingletted 757s from BOS!

On a per flight basis it is Dallas' best performing international route. JFK-LHR, overall, obviously brings in more revenue, but on a per-flight basis, Dallas-Zurich brings in more. Don't forget flights to London have a lot of compietition and capacity. They are solid performers, but the New York City-London market in particular is not a gold mine. MIA is AA's best performing LHR route, again on a per flight basis.

Many passengers from JFK to Zurich on AA connect with LX and LY codeshare flights to TLV.

While the codeshare with LX will be dropped it is possible that the LY codeshare will remain.
