Interesting. It sure will be annoying for those that book discount flight to Chicago/Rockford only to learn how far away Chicago is from here and also about the fact that you have to drive right past O'Hare to get to Chicago from Rockford. I wonder if the new UA Express service that was just announced has something to do with the name change.

Overall I am amazed at how hard the airport authority is trying to get airline service to RFD. They offer everything from free parking to passenger incentives to fill up flights. It is also awesome that RFD landed United. It gives passengers great options. If people living around Rockford want to go west, then they can catch the new flight to DEN and connect, but if they want to go east they can drive to ORD and fly from there. Hopefully more carriers will be on their way!!! UA will now be serving three Chicago area airports making it the real home town airline. Any chance Gary is next to make it four?

You know, I was in the area almost 2 months ago now and their were already billboards up on the 90 advertising the airport as Chicago/Rockford. It is so far out, they might as well call it Chicago (Hahn)

I don't get this, the "Gary/Chicago International Airport" already is a fully operational airport that truly is Chicago's third airport because it is already a part of the "Chicago Airport System". I can't wait to see King Daley's reaction to Rockford using the Chicago name in their airport name without Chicago's approval. If I remember correctly, Gary's use of the Chicago name was permitted only because of the relationship between the Chicago Airport System and the Gary Airport. I am curious to know what kind of rights the City has to the name Chicago. Rockford is not in Chicago and to my knowledge has no formal agreement with the City.

Don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy that Rockford got UA service and I hope they become the true fourth airport for Chicagoland (not including MKE).

East St. Louis, about Carmel, IN (northern suburb of IND), South Bend, IN to the east, and as was said, Madison, WI to the north. For some reason, people get some kind of inferiority complex that they have to say they live in "Chicagoland" but yet are quick to be insulted if you say it's Chicago, or something of the sort "Oh no we don't have all that traffic and crime and corruption." At least that was what people would say in Northwest IN.

I would put the Northern limit of the suburbs at Kenosha and the Northwestern Limit at Huntley which put both MKE and RFD well outside the limits of "Chicagoland". For those not familiar with the Chicagoland area, look at this map to see how far RFD is away. You clearly see how close GYY is.

Very interesting question. Being that I live in Rockford now, I certainly don't consider it Chicago by any means since you have to drive through 30 miles of corn fields before you start to see the suburban sprawl. However to those not from the Illinois, I will say that I live "near Chicago". Rockford is close enough to benefit from the city, but still far enough away to be very separate. I personally think that beyond Crystal Lake (halfway between ORD and RFD) you are no longer in Chicago Land.

Agreed. I never considered Valparaiso as Chicagoland either, but the locals sure did consider themselves in Chicagoland... but yet Chicagoans from say the North/West sides considered Valpo as in the middle of nowhere. You all have identity problems out there.  Silly

Wikipedia gives Chicagoland the counties of:

Illinois: Cook, Kane, Lake, Will, Dupage, Kendall, McHenry
Indiana: Lake
Wisconsin: Kenosha

i would say true Chicago land has the following borders.:

Kenosha to the North
Dekalb to the West
South Bend to the East
and Kankakee to the South.

I'd say anything west of IN state route 49 and north of US 30. Which basically runs from the Dunes Lakeshore Park which locals are so fond of, due south along the east side of Valparaiso where it hits 30, meaning nothing south of that would count within Indiana, but it is including Merrillville and whatnot. Even that is pushing it IMHO, but the second you get east of 49 or south of 30, you're definitely in rural Hoosier heartland. The US 30 rule can be excused once you get into Illinois or at least west of I-65/US-41, in order to include stuff in the Peotone/Kankakee areas, but I wouldn't even include Kankakee. No way SBN is Chicagoland though, that's it's own little deal out there, regardless of the South Shore rail line running all the way to the terminal at SBN... and LaPorte County prior to that is just... well... LaPorte, haha. Even the MSA's break out LaPorte/Michigan City as separate from Chicago.

No NW is still serving RFD as far as I know. However I think UA will win more RFD flyers over since there is the option of connecting via DEN from RFD or going nonstop from ORD. But NW is still here. Hopefully this competition will help lower fares though, since NW is definitely expensive.

I put the western line at Joliet to Aurora to Crystal Lake. I think Dekalb is definitely out there in farm land. But I'll call RFD whatever they want me to if it means that there are more flights since A you save on tolls, B save on parking, and C save time over the ORD megalopolis.

The marketing of this airport is interesting. It does seem a little far out to be considered a Chicago airport, but hey, if it works more power to them. There was apparently enough of a market there way back in, what, 1979, that TWA served it from ORD.

Maybe some other airports around the country can take this crazy idea and run with it:

COS - Denver/Colorado Springs International Airport (Lose the generic "Municipal" moniker).

ABE - Philadelphia/Allentown International Airport (where the hell is Lehigh Valley anyway?)

or how about this one to finally put Kevin Cox over the edge:

DAL - Dallas/Ft Worth International Airport at Love Field

Don't insult us by putting Philly in our name!! haha. Lehigh Valley comes from the Lehigh River, and this area is a pretty low valley if you look at it topographically, bounded by South Mountain to the south, and a few other mountains to the N/W like Blue Mountain, and the Delaware River. The whole reason it's Lehigh Valley Int'l, and ABE, is because it's run by the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (or Aviation authority, whatever). Allentown is in Lehigh County, and is by far the biggest city of all here, but Northampton County would get jealous, and want their cities (Bethlehem and Easton, hence the BE in ABE) included. The whole few-county area is collectively known as the Lehigh Valley, but that terminology is only known by people in Eastern PA and that little sliver of Jersey. You can tell this isn't Philly though every Sunday, too many Steelers fans walking around.  Smile My first observation upon moving here in March was that this area too has a bit of an identity crisis, people around here are pretty adamant that this is NOT Philly, NOT Jersey, and NOT New York City, but we're not too much further from Manhattan and Center City Philly than PVD/MHT are from downtown Boston either. I'm sure Southwest could have successfully pulled off ops here and played it off as their alternative to both Newark and Philly, but instead they went down to the zoo to try and finish off the (then) ailing US.

Yeah, if nothing else, DAY is almost between them and quite the respectable airport/city itself. Not to mention that CVG and CMH are on the opposite sides of their respective cities from each other, CVG being south in KY, and CMH being east along 270. My girlfriend is born and raised in Dayton's suburbs, and one time when I told her it would be cheaper for me to fly direct ABE-CVG on Delta it was like I had told her I was seeing another woman... Daytonians (is that the right term? lol) don't seem to keen on driving down to CVG, and she said she'd rather I fly to CMH. As someone who personally lived in the northern suburbs of CMH for awhile, CVG is a long-ass haul away. Anyone driving from Cincy to CMH, or vice versa, to save a few bucks, is probably the same person who'd pull a dollar bill out of the urinal or something.  crazy

as a student at NIU in DeKalb I can certainly say the city of dekalb is not part of Chicago there is an airport out here Taylor Municipal but its very small. RFD is convient for DeKalb but a lot of people do drive to ORD/MDW. BTW the borders are Kenosha to the north McHenry and Crystal Lake, the Fox Valley towns (Geneva, Elgin, Huntley, Aurora, Naperville) then joliet and finally crete to the south

Anyway, I lived equidistant from DAY and CVG in Oxford, and I liked both airports for different reasons, but there's no way I'd treck over to CMH to save a few bucks or consider it part of the "tri-state" area.

Sort of like how some say driving to Indy to save some money is a viable option for tri-city residents. Sure, maybe if you are in southern indiana near the interstate, but not for the rest of us.

Yeah, if anything, I would say DAY and CVG can serve both cities, but CMH seems a stretch.

Well, Ryanair is under rather strict scrutiny in the EU for false advertising so they do try and stay within IATA boundaries. Hahn is technically Frankfurt/Hahn, so they exploit that. The funny thing is, ONT is considered Los Angeles/Ontario (also owned by the City of Los Angeles, even though it is not in the same county), Long Beach is Los Angeles/Long Beach and Burbank is Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena (in Burbank, but owned by all 3) and is also called "Hollywood/Burbank" by some.
