Today, I was sitting inside my car staring at the Delta section of YVR. It took me a while to notice that the CX flight (HKG-YVR-JFK) parked in gate D73 was a B747-400 from its normal A340-300/600. I was waiting again for a while when I heard CX 838 approaching Vancouver. When it landed, it was yet another B747-400. This is rare; I have seen many A340's of CX parked at YVR when they used to make their technical stop on its way to YYZ but never before have I seen two B744 parked at the same time.
A JAL 744 was in the gate that CX 838 was supposed to use and again, I guess he had trouble understanding the ATC's orders to push back far enough to let the CX come into the gate. He waited a few minutes in D71 until the ATC instructed him to push back far enough to let the Cathay bird come into the gate.
It was a strange day today but does anyone know the reason that CX brought two of its B744 into YVR today? Is it just that the loads were high today or cargo?

I thought CX888/889 (HKG-YVR-JFK) is normally a 744, but it varies (under the CX schedules I think it's listed as EQV). 838/839 is always a 744 I think. I was under the impression the A346 is only exclusively used for the direct non-stop HKG-JFK flight.

The 830/831 has always been an A346. Recently the 838/839 became a 744, and the 888/889 was a 343/346 mix, making two airbuses to JFK.
However, CX this winter will send the 744 back to JFK on the 888/889, and the 838/839 will be handed back to the Airbus. Not sure of the start date, but if a 744 was on the 888 then it must have changed already!
