Nothing earth-shattering here....just the article from the USAToday on the first-ever flight from Chicago to Delhi on American Airlines.

I actually just read this article in USA Today. In the paper, they show the route plan which, according to the article, take the flight right over the North Pole during lighter winds, and over Northern Europe and the 'Stans with stronger winds. Interesting.

I'm in Chicago today and there is bad weather predicted so I am wondering of the inaugural flight will be delayed.

What, then, does he have to say about sitting in a plane for 20 hours? At this length I think non-stop is still preferable.

He also says that American's international service usually doesn't measure up with that of the European and Asian airlines.

"Flying with AA is now not very different from flying with Southwest, and nobody in their right mind would want to fly Southwest all the way to India," Sen says.


In some ways I'd rather fly Southwest to India than AA...

Anyway, I think AA knows their product is not up to scratch with European and Asian airlines, but they are probably targeting US business travellers.

How is CO doing on the route?

14 hours with no IFE and only peanuts? I don't think that is very desirable. Anyways I think he is comparing AA's domestic product to WN. AA international still offers all of the amenities one would expect like PTVs, Food, pillows, etc.

Congratulations to AA. I am still surprised that it is AA flying the route instead of UA.

I'm not sure why this seems so illogical to you. 14 hours is a long time in a plane. I think I'd take a pair of 7 or 8 hour flights any day.

Think of it this way. The 15 hour flight is just enough time to watch two Bollywood movies in their entirity and still eat dinner and catch a nap. They are showing Kyaa Kool Hain Hum this month. That movie is ridiculously long...about three hours, and it's an MTV-style comedy (a good one too, IMO, if you like the American Pie type movies). The traditional Bollywood films are even longer.

I'm totally up for the non-stop if I was traveling solely between Chicago and Delhi, but if I were, say, going between Miami and Mumbai or Dallas and Delhi, I much rather stop in Europe on the way for the break.

I would definitely take a 16 hour non-stop over a 22 hr flight with layovers of 4-6 hours. Flying from US west coast to Asia does take around 14 hrs ( SFO-HKG, LAX-TPE etc) on SQ/Cathay and from there to India via SIN/BKK usually involves 5-9 hours of layover. If I fly SFO-BOM in 16 hours, I would jump for it!!

First = 1 seat left for sale

I think this will do great things for Indian tourism. Two non-stop flights from the states will make India seem less exotic as now almost anyone in the US can be in Delhi with an easy connection at ORD or EWR.

My question is how will this affect other airlines like SQ, MH, TG, etc. Before they had quite a following from the US to India. Now with non-stop flights to North India and one stop connections to North and South India via Europe I'm not sure how many people will take a two stop SQ flight with a 9 hour layover in Changi no matter how stellar their service is.

Will still depend on the pricing  Smile I was enquiring for tickets SEA-BLR for early next year, and Cathay appears to have the best fares compared to AI, AF , LH and BA. SQ and AI were tied for second spot. It will come down to pricing. I was looking up American Airlines website, and it doesn't even list BLR as an airport served by them, though they have an agreement with Sahara. I will probably try out BA or AF this time, unless the fare is more than 100-125 compared to others  Smile

Wow thats some pretty strong loads. There were alot of skeptics who thought this route wasnt viable. But I knew Chicago and AA had what it takes.  Smile

American's tie-up with Air Sahara (I believe there will be some cabin crew from Air Sahara on the flight, too . . .) will be of great help.

What we need now is Air Sahara feeds into UK/Europe and Far East/Japan towards connecting with AA into North America. I especially look forward to a decent S2+AA connection on BLR or DEL-NRT-SJC, should be a winner all the way.

AC tried it, and now AA and CO are trying it.

For the rest of us Indians who don't live or want to visit Delhi, I think these flights matter little. I will still fly LH from DFW or IAH-MAA with one-stop in FRA.

I'd rather stop at FRA once, rather than stop in ORD, and again in DEL, before finally getting to MAA.


On another point, the "aunties and uncles" won't want to pony up the premium to fly nonstop to DEL anyway, as they rather cheapskate themselves on AI's rustbucket 4 stop to MAA, with the no or haphazard IFE, torn seats, and oh so friendly staff.



Tort reform now. Throw lawyers in jail later.

texdravid, for gods sake will you chill out on the "Why not MAA?" stuff. Priority cities for all carriers will continue to be DEL and BOM for some time to come, and given how prudish TN has become of late, I'm not even sure that too many expat Tamils would want to go there other than family reasons.

It's not another point, this is actually the answer for your "why no MAA" whining.

Very true, followed by BLR and HYD. Once the aunties and uncles start ponying up the premium prices for MAA the airlines might think about it. Besides, doesn't DL fly daily to MAA?

26 LY4XELD : No stop enroute, but it is scheduled to arrive (so far) at 11:13PM local time in DEL. It left the gate ontime, but didn't get off the ground until 9:
27 LFutia : Last night, it was raining. There might of been a t'storm in the area and it was windy so im absolutely positive that it was delayed due to weather. L
