Sorry i could not find a link to a story yet but the GTAA will raise thier landing fees by 8% meaning that it will cost an airline $13,000 to land a 747.

I have one question. Are they stupid?

Here's how I imagine the GTAA board meeting going where they came up with this idea.

Suit1: "Hi Everyone. Sorry i'm late, i could not find a parking spot. All these dam planes in the way taking up space"

Suit2: "Yeah! What's with that? They tink they can just park any where."

Suit3: " what can we do about it?

Suit1: " I know lets raise the landing fees. That should get rid of a few"

Suit3: " But if we raise our fees we'll be the most expensive airport in the world. This is Toronto not LA"

Suit1 "So?"

Suit3: "Alright then. I need a bigger parking space anyways"

WTF?

I heard in the news that it only costs just above $7000 to land a 747 in Tokyo NRT .

So now we know why it's becoming rare to see 747s in YYZ.

Are you absolutely sure YYZ is the most expensive in the world? Where is this information located?

I heard it on 680 news this morning on the way to work. Still can't find a story on the net though. The Toronto Star has an article but you need to sign up (it free).
I will keep looking.

From today's Toronto Star....http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1132008611620&call_pageid=968332188492&col=968793972154

The Federal Liberals are a disgrace to this country, and specific to this thread, their transportation policy headed by an embarrassment of a man, Jean Lapierre who last week showed no understanding of YYZ costs with his comments of "they can fly to Montreal" (mild paraphrasing).

The rent formulas are a joke. It's clear it was specifically designed to milk YYZ for all it's worth, and now, like with everything else Liberals touched, it's gone too far. People in the GTA should be up in arms demanding a realistic deal, not voting for these clowns. Toronto is the economic engine of the country (albiet recently dominated by oil money in the west).

As per usual the apathy of the public will almost certainly ensure that rent doesn't change, and that the government doesn't change. One more not so subtle shot to the b*lls from a government only interested in salvaging it's blown reputation in Quebec by handing out wads of cash to the citizenry, from the coffers of YYZ.

Isn't KIX the world most expensive major airport to land?

What's bad news for YYZ is good news for YHM, but they're in need of a lot of improvements.

I don't think the landing fees raise would make non-USA airlines move to YUL from YYZ when flying to that part of Canada.

doubt very much. What is more likely is YHM picks up a few crumbs, that is in case they upgrade their facility.

With Toronto being the "capital" of Canada  Sad , it doesn't surprise me that YYZ is the most expensive airport in the country, but in the world? What's going on???? The Toronto Star only mentions 747-400s, but how about other planes?

How would this influence AC operations?

They don't need an airport anyway, they have the 401, the 427, the 403, the QEW and many others.
We know that AF was trying to avoid these landing fees and land on the 401 instead one day in August...

Dudes you're out of topic  old  , but don't expect these wanna-be-elected oil businessmen from the prairies to be anything better. (like any other government in the world by the way...) That's politics dudes... All about corruption and $$ and power control. I sometimes wonder on which planet the Canadians live... and even more about the Québécois, not only shocked by the Federal Liberals corruption but also by the sniffing scandals around their wanna-be head-of-state Big grin

At the end of the day, airlines won't stop flying to YYZ, they'll up their fares to absorb the cost going to YYZ.. So while YYZ is upping the cost, it's costing the consumers more to travel their. One more reason why I hate Toronto.

NRT should be #1, KIX #2, then new NGO #3. NRT has reduced its landing fees starting October this year but still beats KIX's prices.

Toronto is the centre of the universe and they want the honor of the most expensive airport in the world. They have spent a lot of money on a big terminal that is only used by AC and this terminal replaced the old terminal 1 in which it has one of the best parking lots for plane spotting in the nation.

I thought Ottawa was the Capital of Canada.

I wouldn't mind flying from Hamilton for a cheaper fare, but sadly only a few airlines operate to YHM.

I guess more guys will be forced to fly from Buffalo.

With the so few 747s that come to YYZ, I would most certaintly hate to see some of them find an alernate cheaper route. But, you cant do much about it!

Jean Lapierre should go down in history alongside Marie Antoinette, who is supposed to have replied to a comment about people who could not afford to buy bread with "Let them eat cake".

I think folks on here that would be willing to fly from YHM but are hurt by the limited destinations the are offered, I would suggest maybe e-mail the YHM Airport Authority and tell them for thoughts about it. Also the airlines.

The GTAA is not to be blamed. This increase is directly in response to the increase in rent demands by the Feds.

For those of you who voted Liberal and are now whining about these increases: shame on YOU for your hypocracy. You are simply getting the GTAA fees that you voted for.

Do NOT vote Liberal if these fees offend you. Peace.

1. Landing fees are based on the weigh of the ac.
2. The average size of ac landing in YYZ is smaller than say 5 years a go.

If YHM would invest money to improve the facilities so they can handle
w/b ac, yes indeed YHM would have a chance to p/u some carriers from YYZ.

Cheers,

If one of their election promises had been to try to get airlines to go to YUL instead of YYZ, and thus help to keep Quebec in Canada the next time they have a referendum, I certainly wouldn't have voted for them. Now, it looks as though I will have a chance to not vote for them within the next couple of months.  Smile

Well Swissy yes and no. YHM is only convenient for those (rather hapless <-- sorry Andy!  Smile) Ontarians who live in west Sauga and west from there. A definite minority of current YYZ travellers.
