I'd personally try to avoid such connection. I've done it (from LGW to LHR, not out of choice; BA screwed up and had to put me on another flight). It was a pain. I'd only consider doing it willingly if it'd save me lots and lots of money.

Take his advice. I've done it once to save a couple of hundrend bucks and it wasn't worth it. Damn shuttle took two hours and the security line @ LHR was ridiculous

That's one of the problem flying nonstop out of DFW is that it goes to Gatwick, and Gatwick although a nice airport doesn't have the connecting capacity of Heathrow.
There are 4 nonstop AA and 1 BA flight and they all go to Gatwick

Not to mention unlike a while back, you take your luggage with you while transferring btwn the two airports. Before you didn't have to and the shuttles were free but I'm talking 8-9 years ago.

I did LHR- LGW during a Friday aftternoon rush-hour in two months ago. Being familiar with the M25 (the road you will go on between the two) I opted to travel via London on the Train & Tube.
The Tube from Heathrow to Central London got delayed because of flooding. My interconecting station for the tube (you need to go Heathrow to Earls Court, change there for Victoria and then a normal train to Gatwick) was also flooded so I had to go out of my way to another station and then double back to Victora - What a nightmare. Ironically, the train passes over the M25 about ten miles north of Gatwick. There was hardly a car in sight. i should have caught the bus.
Direct road transport will cost £18 approx for a single - journey time (on a good day) 65 minutes
Train to London / Tube to Heathrow will cost approx £13. 35minutes from Gatwick to central London then at least another hour to Heathrow
Train to Central London/Tube across London/Heathrow Express from Paddington to Heathrow will cost approx £18 with a journey time of 35 mins to central London / 40 minutes to get to Paddington and 15 minutes from Paddington to Heathrow.
Taxi - about 45-50 minutes and probably £70

You could fly out of IAH instead as this flies to LHR with a stopover in ORD.
