Ads On Airline Storage Bins

There's a small article in USA Today about airlines allowing ads on their overhead storage bins. Vanguard and Sun Country are already doing it promoting themselves and are thinking about letting other companies advertise also.
What do you think? Good/Bad idea?

I actually e-mailed this company to give them my perspective on the idea; I wished them luck with the idea and can understand companies like Sunjet and Southwest using this type of marketing medium (let's face it these carriers are buses in the sky). But, when it comes to "classy" carriers, I hope they can see that this concept crosses the line. Let's face it, big name carriers spend alot of money to set that special mood when you board the plane (everything from background music to the seat upholstery)... why in the hell would they mess it all up with bill-boards on the luggage bins. I think that airlines with any sense of tact will realize that in-flight magazines and in-flight entertainment are proper mediums for advertising on-board... not luggage bins. What's next... safety demonstrarion videos brought to you by McDonalds with Ronald Mcdonald showing us how to put on an Oyxgen mask !?!?!?! Show some restraint already.... the public is tired of looking at advertisements every time they turn around.

I truly hope airline employees will forward this response to their respective marketing departments..... "show some tact and Say no to bill-board bins"

The very idea sounds extremely tacky to me, it's bad enough seeing some of the advertising already found on the exteriors of some airliners.
I fear that the incorporation of advertising inside the aircraft cabin would only make it more difficult for pax to find exit and safety placarding should an emergency occur.

as far as safety is concerned, these advertisements arer FAA compliant so safety does not seem to be a factor.

Bad, bad, bad idea. Just what we need - airliner interiors cluttered by a bunch of ads posted on the overhead luggage bins. That will make them look like city buses on the inside. UGH. Next thing you know, they'll have as many advertisements in in-flight entertainment as they do on TV and radio.

They are not public transportation buses, they are public transport aircraft. What's the difference? The best-selling public transport aircraft is actually called a bus. If if makes fares cheaper or airlines more profitable, then why not? I'm surprised it hasn't happened already.

aerolineas argentinas has advertising on their aircraft. there is a white paper like material that makes a head rest (very tacky) and there is a big YPF advertisemnet on them

Repsol-YPF is an oil company, i think it stands for something petrolium and fuel. i could be wrong though. its the same thing as shell or BP(british petrolium)

you're right Bacardi, that is tacky. I suppose in Aerolineas Argentinas' case, they really need the revenue though. proposed 20% employee pay cuts is going to hurt.

Disagree and agree. Every domestic US flight is like a bus. Period. NOt just Southwest and Sunjet. Also, IMHO, the more likely candidates to go for this might just be those other "classy" airlines.

In the past 9 months, the "classy" airlines have raised fares three times, blaming increased fuel costs. Southwest has only raised them once, and even then it wasn't nearly as high as the other guys. So, IMHO, those "classy" carriers may see this as a way to recoup those fuel costs without passing on yet another fare increase.

Take any airline flight of 2 hours or less and you'll get a delicious meal of...peanuts. People are already up in arms about paying so much for gasoline, they've watched airfares rise because of oil, and you would have to wonder how many more fare increases they are willing to take and recieve the same level of "service" provided by Southwest. Southwest makes more money per flight than the other guys...so it seems to me that those other guys might just see this as a great way to reduce their CSM's.

I wasn't trying to insult Southwest (they're nice folks), I'm simply calling it what it is. I fly them every once in a while and it's a bus... plain and simple. There's nothing wrong with providing bus service via air... I'm simply pointing out that certain carriers could care less about the aesthetics and that bill-boards on the bins, tray-tables and in the toiletts is something they would go for to save us a couple bucks.... and that's great. On the other hand, aesthetics to other carriers is a huge deal and rather than plastering the cabin with McDonalds, they'd rather do it in a subtle and classier way (i.e inflight magazines, boarding cards). This is the same reason why Southwest has such an ugly paint job and cabin interior compared to SIA for example.

My point in all this is that it looks tacky. Air travel is supposed to be a pleasant experience... something nice to experience like going to a nice restaurant and this type of marketing takes away from that. And hey if oil prices sky-rocket, then that's just economics... air-fare is going to have to go up some.

What kind of society are we turning into when every available space is turned into a billboard to take advantage of a captive audience? So, I guess it boils down to this; do you want to spend 6 hours in a confined area and be treated as a target market or do you want to be treated as a customer and human being. I'm willing to shell out some extra bucks for the latter.

Those of you complaining about what kind of society they live in, with ads everywhere etc...well, it's called capitalism. All that matters is the almighty $. I don't always like every aspect of it either but we can always move to Mogadishu if we want a different aesthetic. Sorry.

Not real keen on the idea but like everywhere else we are bombarded with advertising. It would be nice to think that whether you are travelling for business or pleasure one could escape the grasp of the advertising agency. Having said this I also can see that it would raise needed revenue for the airlines.

I didn't hear too much complaining when Logo Jets came around and I was just as happy as the next spotter/photographer whenever I captured one on film.

How much longer till you read a sign above your seats that states " This row of seats is sponsored by ........ "

Before too long the interior of aircraft will resemble Formula 1 racing cars ( can't see the colour of the car for the decals), or a European footballer's uniform, ads right down to his socks. ( then there will be hell to play for those players who like to push their socks down... but this issue is for the non aviation forum )

MOrecy, IMHO, if this idea takes hold, Southwest will be one of the last ones to implement it. Mostly because they have long said that "every seat is first class". Bear in mind that in several markets, the passengers on Southwest jets are corporate executives who most likely drove to the airport in a Mercedes.

Southwest's "tacky" colors also make it one of the most visible liveries in the world. Their interiors are on a par with the other domestic American carriers.

or, what about all of the huge billboards that you ussually see when you are leaving or entering an airport? those are sometimes cool because they could have a good airplane pic, but otherwise they anoy me. The advertising doesnt bother me that much but i am just sick to death of .com advertising. I havew learned ro ignore it and i want to teach a class on how to do so go to www.bacardi182-.com=crap.com. there is free email and online trading!

I've been out about 20 years longer than you my friend. I didn't say that Southwest was all first class, that was a marketing line from years ago. For those of you who are younger than Southwest, you might not remember the FA's in hotpants, free booze on all flights, and other things. Back then, for a short haul flight, Southwest had first class beat...hands down.

My point is, Southwest is a businessman's airline, believe it or not. But, because people equate "low fare" with "low life", there's an image of "bus". To avoid that corporate image, I think Southwest would be the LAST to implement these things.

Sw traded in the booze and hot-pants for peanuts and golf shirts a long time ago so I don't see the point you're trying to make. That was then and this is now. Alot of business men may travel SW today, but it's certainly not for the First class amenities... it's for the cheap fares. Again, there's nothing wrong with that; they found a great niche in making air travel affordable to everyone and they provide a great service. But if you think for a single minute that SW would shy away from this type of in-flight marketing because it somehow clashes with their concept of elite service... then you're totally off the marker.

25 Tr1492 : In-plane advertising would be the last thing I'd want to see in the aircraft (keep it to the magazines which I never read) - however, doesn't this see
26 Shankly : Ryanair has ads on the back of the seats. I think it's some sort of cut price PTV!
