I believe it's a protective coating. There was a time when the 'black dot' was common. Then, I believe it was actually rubber or something. Later, paints/coatings could achieve the same thing and were applied to the radome. Maybe AA went back to it out of tradition a la the flat black paint under the windshield on SW planes?
