Quoting Soups (Reply 1): i believe they are the only US airline that currently flies to africa (Excluding codeshare)// not sure if World Airways is American
Yes World Airways and North American are the only US airlines to fly to Africa, but CO will introduce ACC and LOS soon! (Sorry if I didn't make it very clear in the first post!)
CO would be the biggest airline in Mexico. Than would come AA.
# Who has the biggest presence in Asia? NWA yea or UA one of the two
# Who has the biggest presence in South America? AA yes that is for sure
# Who has the biggest presence in Europe? For destinations CO has to be the winner but for PAX thats a hard one. DL or CO.
# Who has the biggest presence in Africa*? (CO, as ACC and LOS will be added?)
# Who has the biggest presence in Australia/Pacific? UA yes only one who flys down under
# Who has the biggest presence in Mexico? CO
# Who has the biggest presence in Canada? I would say NW
# Who has the biggest presence in the Caribbean? AA that is a given with their SJU hub
# Who has the biggest presence in the USA? DL yea that would be my guess too but CO and AA are large too. All these airlines are huge in the US ofcourse.
# Who has the biggest presence in Eastern Europe? (DL?)
# Who has the biggest presence in the UK? AA Yea I would say AA also flying many 777s in everyday into LHR and also flights to MAN,LGW and Glasglow
# Who has the biggest presence in Germany? DL Yea with there partnership with LU.

Depends on the metric. CO flies to the most cities, but AA carries the most passengers, and DL has the most RPMs. However, by next year, DL will probably lead in all three categories.

Quoting Commavia (Reply 7): Within the U.S., WN carries the most passengers.
Well, he didn't list WN as one of his majors, but this is a statistic that's really hard to believe. I'm not saying it's false, I'm just saying it's amazing that an airline that only flies 737's to non-major airports has been able to achieve the feet of carrying the most passengers in the US. Guess people really do like low fares....

The last time I heard, this was still true (remember we're speaking only of domestic US). I also believe that WN has the most daily domestic departures, at 3010 (Mon-Fri) in the current schedule, with DL second.
Now back to the poster's original question, NOT counting WN, who carries the most domestic pax?

Quoting Letsgetwet (Reply 9): If I'm not mistaken CO flies to about 31 Mexican airports , AA flies to about 8.
Continental may fly to dozens of cities in Mexico, but American still carries more passengers, as most of Continental's presence in Mexico is with Continental Express. American has more seats to Mexico, and carries more people there, than Continental. This is just a fact. This is largely due to the fact that whereas the average Continental flight to Mexico has around 80 seats on it, the average American flight to Mexico has around 140. So, in essence, each time American sends an A300 on JFK-CUN or MIA-MEX, for example, it is essentially carrying the equivelant of almost 6 RJs that Continental might send from Houston down to Mexican airports.

Several points: first, believe it, because it's true. Southwest now carries more passengers within the United States than any other airline. American is #2, Delta is #3. Further, while Southwest does only fly 737s, they hardly serve only "non-major airports." While they do fly to many secondary metro airports, they also fly to Chicago-Midway, hardly a non-major airport, to LAX, to Orlando, to Las Vegas, etc.

"Some People Just Know How To Fly"- Best slogan ever, RIP NW 1926-2009
Apparently, some continue to regard the number of cities an airline flies to as an accurate measure or reflection of the relative market presence of the airline in that given market, whereas the industry has generally disregarded this measurement in favor of more accurate, reflective metrics like ASMs, capacity, etc.
In terms of the number of available seats in the market, based on my own calculations from the six largest U.S. airlines' schedules to Canada, American (together with Eagle) is the largest airline with a total of 40,275 weekly seats, and 417 weekly departures. Second is Northwest (31,597 weekly seats, 387 weekly flights). Next comes United at 30,550 weekly seats and 346 weekly flights. Some of these numbers may very well be somewhat out of date.
Nonetheless, I doubt that since I calculated these numbers, Northwest has added 8,678 weekly seats to their Canada schedule, or conversly that American has eliminated that man seats. Furthermore, American must operate at a 78% load factor overall to Canada to carry as many people as Northwest if it was operating at a 100% loadfactor to the country to the north. I doubt that is happening.
In summary, American has the most flights, and the most weekly seats, to Canada from the United States. It may not serve the most cities, but that has a poor reflection of an airline's relative size in a given market.

Delta is larger than American within the United States. faa.gov or whatever the site is has DL listed as #2 behind WN, AA is a close 3rd.
