This is not a A vs. B posting! Who remembers whom IAD is named after?

Interesting factoid... didn't know that.

I do know that the three letters = International Airport Dulles.

IAD should stand for "Icky, Antiquated Dulles".

Hopefully the new Pier C and D will be completed before the 22nd century.  Wink

His father and uncle were also both Sec States. His brother Allen Dulles was also head of the CIA under Eisenhower. Quite the family.

This just shows how imature some people on here are. Let it go!! Yes, Dulles is in the process of becoming better, but it really is NOT that bad.

IIRC, wasn't the land out in western Fairfax and eastern Loudon counties owned by the Dulles family? Hence why the airport was named after J.F. Dulles?

IAD's original airport code was DIA (for Dulles International Airport) but, back in the day of handwritten strips used by ATC, DIA looked too much like DCA and it became an issue so the code was changed. (I don't know why I know that or where I heard that...)

Because the two airports are 23 miles apart.

There has been an occasional campaign to rename Dulles after someone more diplomatic rather than the harsh anti-Communist cold warrior John Foster Dulles. While most Americans have forgotten Dulles, his name still brings resentment in other parts of the world, hardly suitable for the international gateway to the nation's capital.

As UA hubs go, okay, it's a bit better then ORD because it actually has shore power in the terminal. But compared to the SFO or DEN hubs, it's dark, dirty, and totally underwhelming. LAX beats it because you don't need the moonbuggies to get around.
