Dubai has announced plans to build the world’s largest airport at a cost of 30 billion dirham that could handle 120 million passengers. The Jebel Ali International Airport (JXB) would be of the combined size of London’s Heathrow and Chicago’s O’Hare airports and would be 10 times bigger than Dubai International Airport. Currently, London’s Heathrow hold the first position with a capacity of 83.5 million passengers.

I really don't know how they think they are going to attract that many people out there.. and how Emirates is going to fill 43 A380s.. I wish them luck!

ATL is tops in terms of passengers that go through it, Heathrow has the most terminal (but not runway) capacity while the actual largest airport by land area is RUH

Since when is Dubai the world's new vacation spot? I know Emirates has the capacity to transport that many passengers, (mainly because they have more money than most countries it seems) but 120 million through Dubai? I'm no expert but doubtful...

I think the key is "through", i.e. transit. They're not looking to handle all of them in Dubai

I guess thats true...Probably just building it for use as a hub, in which case that would make sense, as long as they expand on the current airport, and not building an entire new airport around the city.

The current airport is too close to central Dubai. I stayed there three years ago in a hotel very close to the flight path of the departing aircraft (or landing aircraft, depending on the wind) in Deira.

I saw many many planes from the hotel and suffered the noise. But it was a perfect location for spotting  Smile, most of the planes were (three years ago) EK's B772 and A332.

I think it's a good idea to build an airport in another location.
